India in search of tigers

Hi all

We are thinking about a trip to India in the April school holidays next year. Main reason is to try to see a tiger or two and then add some touristy bits around that (would be our first time in India). I am thinking we would fly in and out of Delhi and focus around that area.

I have heard April is very hot and so not the best time to visit India, but I have also heard it is one of the best time to actually see tigers. We are locked into school holidays so can't go in February or March.

I would appreciate any suggestions people might have about seeing tigers but also other attractions around Delhi.

Temps will be in the 40s during the day and rising towards 45+ in May dropping to 30s overnight.
The problem is that it is almost impossible to venture outside unless in an air conditioned vehicle.
Delhi is a great city with many attractions as well as restaurants, shopping malls etc. Taj Mahal of course is not to be missed - best to be there at dawn!

If it is your first time you may well discover what 'Delhi Belly' is!

If you do succumb track down a local Doctor asap as they have a wealth of experience and are generally excellent.
 
We went in March and saw a tiger at Ranthambore. I think you also had to be lucky as people in other safari vehicles that day didn't get to see the tiger. The weather at the time was fine. I can't imagine it would get unbearably hot just a month later.
 
Thanks for the replies. We would be there in the second half of April. Talking more with an Indian colleague, he suggested that Delhi would be very hot, but elsewhere would be fine.
jetpack - how long were you in Ranthambore? Where else did you go? I know it will need luck to see a tiger, but my approach is that the more days you are there, the higher the chances.
