I like the last part. "Most important is, not forget to enjoy the lights also! Balance taking pictures and enjoying it."

Sometimes I don't take photos of things or just take one or two and then spend the rest of the time looking and feeling and appreciating what I have and what I can see.

Best of both worlds - enjoy the view and have someone else capture both

I saw the Northern Lights on a flight from ORD to ICN early last December, while the plane was above Alaska. Unfortunately didn't take my fancy camera on that trip, so I couldn't get any good photos. Completely ruined my plans to sleep through the whole flight, but the experience was worth all the jetlag and fatigue after the flight :D

Have you booked something yet? We saw the aurora whilst in Levi, Lapland, Finland. Flew into Kittila on Finnair from Helsinki. It was easy to get away from lights down at a lake (which was frozen at the time being January) but it was very, very cold. September should be somewhat warmer! You should try to schedule your visit wherever you decide to go when there is not a full moon.

Plspoon, thanks for the tip about moon phase. Might influence my booking time

We found the moon great for lighting up the foreground in photos. Also meant that you could walk around in the dark without a touch. For very faint (or not visible with naked eye) aurora, less moon is better for photos, though.

thanks to everyone who has posted in reply to my original post
we have finally booked - going the long way (i think) around but had SQ miles to burn and keen to try A350 J
final itin is ADL-SIN-ARN-OSL-TOS , open jaw ARN-SIN-ADL back. staying 3 nights (still planning...) in ARN and 3 in TOS

PM'ed amaroo for your recommendation for the private tour for the lights chase

if anyone has contacts/recommendations for a private guide i would very much appreciate a PM - thanks!

I am going to Tromso in Northern Norway in late Nov this year....flying to London for a work conference....+1 is coming on points. Norwegian, a LCC so quite cheap to purchase , fly direct to Tromso twice a week from Lgw, and daily via Oslo. My work colleague went 2 months ago and said the Northern Lights from Tromso was better than Iceland...ymmv of course :)
