I find sometimes that as a QF SG I get an empty seat next to me... on a QF flight.

I wouldn't get carried away with having a shadow as a NB or PS.Only fly Y domestically.More often than not I have a shadow. But even though often I can switch to 4B.E I don't want to upset those exalted CLs,WP1s and ordinary WPs so I usually select row7,8.As I said works most of the time.

I am a lowly bronze; but on my last 6 international flights I have had no-one beside me.
So it's true that airlines looked after their potential frequent flyers?

If a spare seat next to you means a shadow, then the back of the plane can be a dark, dark place.

I was on a QF SYD-MEL flight 2 weeks ago.The only people who had shadows were those in 29A,C and 25D,F.

[mod hat on]

I've just moderated close to 20 posts that are off topic. Yes, as you can see AustraliaPoochie is suspended, but this is not the thread to discuss that (nor is anywhere really). Please try keep to the topic.

I recently missed my flight from Brisbane to Newcastle (NSW) and had to pay $700 for a Flexi economy on QF. I needed to fly on that day and JQ and VA where sold out. The sales person at the airport then said that he wasn't going to sit anyone else next to me.

I did think that perhaps his luck of getting a free seat next to him (shadow) was the ticket price/the often referred to PCV.

It makes sense.

Some years ago I was forced to buy a walk up fare from AA at full Y levels and was told the flight was full but they could give me row 1 anyway (this was on an all Y CRJ). yep, seat next to me free.

given the price tag it was a small mercy!
