I am travelling with my 77 year old mother to New York for 8 nights in October. I am Hyatt platinum. I am wondering if anyone has had any experiences or recommendations as an elite hyatt member at New York City Hyatt hotels. I am considering upgrading our stay with points to a suite as I ideally I would like two separate sleeping spaces as opposed to twin accommodation (if that will work). Otherwise I guess Ill be looking at air bnb for apartments.

TIA

I like the Hyatt Grand Central, but the exec lounge is quite small and thus very busy. The hotel is in a great location at grand central of course so that's a massive plus.

The suites are pretty good - large living space and we've previously stayed with a roll out set up for "extras" in the living space too.

It's also a massive hotel so the service is highly impersonal. A family member of mine has stayed there for the best part of two weeks every year for 20 years - no recognition of that at all other than occasional room upgrades which was probably more a factor of his Hyatt status (compared to other hotels where he'd stay similar durations but knew the hotel managers, some of the staff etc). But that's NYC!

So all in all - great location and decent hotel provided you don't over pay and have modest expectations!

Happy to try and answer other specific questions if I can.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Couldn't agree with Docjames more, stayed 5 nights in October 2012 very busy hotel, lots of conferences so at peak times wait for lifts can be annoying. Great location. Housekeeping pretty average, think mould in shower, really not acceptable for a 5* property. Would I stay again, probably not, for the price we paid much better options available.

Than you for the info. I've made a reservation at Hyatt andaz 5th avenue. Used points to upgrade to a splash suite. Excellent reviews on trip advisor.

Disappointing to read of the lack of extra service after 20 years!!! I must say I feel very well looked after in Australia as a mere platinum!

The Andaz properties in NYC on 5th and Wall/Water Street far eclipse any of the other Hyatt properties... that is until the Park Hyatt returns later this year.

The GH renovation is dull and soulless. They no longer offer room service, either. Far too many people, and the food in the lounge is awful. Outdoor club lounge with views of the Chrysler Building are, however, cool.

The Andaz 5th is a very cute, chic boutique hotel and the breakfast is excellent. It's a nice oasis out of the bustle of what's outside.

I guess "that's New York" where only really big names and the "latest and greatest" get any recognition, especially in a hotel of that size. Loyalty? Long term user? Large umber of bed nights over a long period? Bah!! :D

I must admit I'm excited by what I read. I will report back.

I have another question. I am contemplating doing a diamond challenge for the trip. I can obtain Hilton gold with my velocity gold for the challenge. Anyone done one of these? Any chances do you think of getting a 2 bed suite upgrade on my points/ cash paid suite?

We stayed at Hyatt 48 Lex last year - because when I booked it wasn't open but it was taking reservations and it was so much cheaper with points than anywhere else. the rooms were nice enough. the location was fine. We did wish we stayed at the Hyatt Grand Central, because it looked so much more grand but I didn't have the extra points required to stay there anyway. 48 Lex had a very weird reception/foyer area but it did have a cafe that was included for everyone (it wasn't that great), and 1-2 blocks from Grand Central Station and on Lexington Parade it was still walking distance to most things and easy to get the subway if you wanted. If it is still the cheapest with points I would say its worth it. If there isn't much of a difference (I think it might have changed bands with the last review) maybe one of the others is a better option.

* I just spoke with my partner and he said that the room was nice, just the entry was weird. If he remembers the rooms being nice - they must have been decent haha.
