How to avoid huge tourist overcrowded destinations?

And if you have a bad experience, there's so much of the world to see why would you go back, I guess?

This year we have been traveled in early June to Rome, Napoli and Barcelona. We didn't expect overcrowding because it was before school holidays.

Unfortunately there were many cruise ships, that probably contributed to overcrowding that we didn't envisaged. We have experienced this a first time, although I know about this problem from some articles warning Australians.
