How much longer or out of your way are you willing to fly so you will fly in J on points?

Wow. To call this lopsided is an understatement. I thought it was not 'rational' 🤣 but clearly I'm in the minority. Wondering where I went so wrong...
And as skyring points out there can be lots of factors in play. A 9.5 hour flight arriving at my destination at 6am when I can’t check in to a hotel gives me little benefit. I’m tired and just want to shower and sleep. The 16 hour flight gets me in well rested and ready to explore. Doesn’t really matter if I can’t check in!

Depends on the lounge!!! At an extreme, I'm not sure spending 5 hrs in the lounge used by many airlines at DPS is particularly relaxing or something that I would look forward to.
yes, indeed, the specific locations and facilities at those locations does contribute to the overall decision process.

Let's see.
I'm flying Melbourne Singapore Mumbai Helsinki London. All on points in J.
I will do ANYTHING to avoid economy (over 3 hrs) EVER again!!

Actually Mr Terry was doing both legs of a trip to London from Sydney over and back with two stopovers , Haneda and Finland. Paid flight but significantly cheaper than others (JAL) . Handy though his return flight they cancelled the Finland to Japan flight so now he is going direct from London to Sydney via Haneda only.
Even though the flight is much longer going over , he is quite chuffed cause ...well Finland lol

Flying Syd-Mel-Hnd in J at Easter with Qf as that is all I could get released by Qf. No way I would fly overnight Syd-Hnd in Y!
Just had a win with Qf....received an email last night saying our Mel-Hnd is now rescheduled 2 hours earlier as Mel-Nrt departing at 0925 making it almost impossible to connect from Syd on same day...rang Qf premium who proactively offered us the new daytime Syd-Hnd flight 1220 to 2015 on the same day as original flights which i agreed to immediately :)

I have a friend who has booked a business class flight which takes 16 hours (because of transit) on award points when he could have flown directly on economy for 9.5 hrs but had to pay in cash - not much of a difference between business surcharge&taxes and cash economy ticket.

Ignoring all other factors, how long of a detour will you be willing to make to take business class award flight (with lie flat beds) vs cash economy?

I would say anything more than 20% of the direct flight time is not worth it as, yes, J is great but u r still stuck on a metal tube with limited options.
I agree with your friend - why travel Economy when you have access to Business class?
We've just done a trip from Adelaide to Frankfurt and only one of us had enough points, so were looking at Premium Economy at about $4.5 k , when I saw one of the usual ads for ' cheap' business fares. Followed through with the travel agent and ended up with Business class fares at a little over $6 k with Oman Air. Trip was a bit longer, as it was ADL/KL/Muscat/ FRA, with each flight about 7 hours. But totally worth it as Oman turned out to be brilliant, comfort, service and food were all top class and a short wait in their lounge was not hard to take! We wouldn't think twice about doing that again.

This may be sacrilegious on this site, but it's not all about the flights for me. Mrs G and I are going to the subcontinent early next year for a wedding. We considered two options for the leg there.

1. Day time flights via SIN in Y. Evening arrival. Transfer to a five star hotel suite for the night. Wedding the next day (and day after, and day after that - it IS an Indian wedding!). ~15 hours travel.
2. Overnight flights in J via CMB. Arrive morning of the (first day of the) wedding. ~22hours.

Sleep in a King Bed in a hotel suite trumps sleeping on a lie flat J seat any day of the week for me. Option 1 was an easy decision.
Ex syd?
I've booked syd-kul-cmb in J, as only Y available syd direct cmb. I'd like that J dct cmb seat you rejected.

Junior and his wife and baby were booked on QF F some three years back, SYD-LAX. Because of inbound flight delay he got QF to route SYD-DXB-LAX in F

Yes, have heard that Oman are pretty good and have some very attractive fares (in Y too, if you must!).

I'm ex-BNE. I honestly can't remember the exact routing, but I *think* the option connected through MEL and CMB. As mentioned, less appealing than a paid Y day time connection through SIN and a nice hotel waiting at the other end.

Vowed I’d never again do Y after my last night MAS flight that was about 8 years ago - I happily and regularly leave via any available capital city then via somewhere I don’t really need to go, to get me to where I need to be.

So I'll fly Y (extra leg room) for up to 3 hours, like LAX/YVR next week on AC.
Note I spent 25 years flying Mel/Yvr 3+ times pa in Y, but once seat width dropped to 17" with the 787s that was the end.
Longer or go out of the way? I'll fly RTW if needed. Doing that in F on QF/LH/SQ next week at a fare well below QF asking price for Mel/Yvr in J.

Not "pretty good“, I'd say amazing! Near first class food and drink. And really competitive fares.
I've just booked my 3rd trip to Europe with them.
Downside: Points and status options not great though I'm crediting to Etihad

Not taking long way round in any cabin if costs more points/dollars over more direct routing or I wanted to take the long route.

I'm also one of the minority who prefers shorter flights to longer flights. I don't think there's any direct BNE-BKK at the moment. I'm looking at comfort and 9h-9.5h is on the longish side and I'd much rather BNE-SIN-BKK to break up trip.

And usually the airfares for 1-2 stop stopovers are cheaper.

Did an OWCA last year and the first leg was to europe. To get there we did ADL>PER>KUL>HKT>DOH>LHR in J.

Could have gone direct in Y but had never flown proper business class before. 43hrs door to door, pure heaven the whole way. Drank and ate non stop, sampled a variety of different business seats (QF, QR, MH) and lounges, absolutely minced by the time we got to London. Would take that over a direct Y flight any day.
