How much cheaper will trans-Pacific flights get?

More importantly, your attention-deficit problem may respond to a little Ritalin. How do you get by in the business world when you can't even make it through a few paragraphs without getting bored?
Nah, I prefer natural alternatives e.g. exercise. Anyway, why so quick to prescribe the attention-deficit problem as human, and not content based.

I don't know of any accommodation in Manhattan that would suit travelers on that budget. I'm sure it exists, I just don't know where.

You could rent out the floor in your apartment ;)

Interestingly people who live in a city don't always know the cheapest places to stay in the city. I am sure my parents know more about the cost of hostels in Oz than I ever would as in SYD I don't need to stay anywhere cheaply and if people visit me, I would give my spare room rather than recommending somewhere cheap in the city...

Often true, and I certainly don't know the cheapest places on the GC. But don't you hear about local hotel bargains around? For example I know you can score the Marriot at Sufferers Paradise for around $100/ night on lastminute.com.au, or a spectacular (2 bedroom - 24th floor) sub-penthouse at Main Beach for under $200/ night etc etc.

Nup - I guess I am totally oblivious to it all. If I have to stay in a hotel in the city I am likely to stay in a luxury boutique hotel (say for a birthday or anniversary) or stay at the Hilton. If people are visiting us they either stay with us or with other friends family.

The joys of having a 3 br house for 2 people ;)

Nah. I see threads on FT about hotel discounts, but I don't go looking. People who visit either stay with us (friends), or we sponsor them at the local W hotel (family).

As for letting out the spare rooms (or the floor!) in my apartment to strangers, I'm sure that the Coop Board would have a mental. Besides, most tourists like hanging around Midtown, don't they?

Thanks everyone for your learned responses. A lot more involved that I would have thought. I guess I'll "wait and see".

I wonder whether it will end up being cheaper (or the same) with RTW tickets. Haven't looked at that option.

Will the A380 have the capability to do Sydney to NYC or Chicago nonstop? Would these be routes we may see in a few years?

I doubt we will see QF operating those with A380 for a while. Perhaps they may be a target for the 787-9 in QF colours. NYC is not going to happen non-stop in a And I would also expect DFW may be ahead of ORD.

While ORD-SYD may technically be in the quoted range for the aircraft, ultra long-haul flights are generally fail to be cost competitive unless there is a lot of premium cabin fares being sold. Just the extra cost of ferrying (tankering) the extra fuel for the last few hours of the flight becomes a declining benefit as the flight duration increases. Most airlines find its more economical to carry extra freight (which generates income) rather than extra fuel (which costs money).

There are a few factors to be considered but I do not think the open skies agreement will cause the airfares on this route to reduce by much, if at all.

V Australia may have some start up specials but I would not expect this trend to continue. It is too easy to charge a premium on this route and people will continue to pay it.

I agree with JohnK on this. Until there is a substancial glut of seats on this run the prices will remain high and that glut is not going to happen for quite a while until the manufacturers sort out their huge backlogs.

Are we seeing the start of cheaper flights with Virgin Australia's new route? Couldn't miss the huge ad on Pennant Hills Road at Thornleigh (Sydney) today and now the big banner ad on this website!

"From $1899" in Feb-March. Not bad.

On Transpacific north -> south, there are some not bad fares from LAX-SYD r.t. USD1300 in september/october
