I'm travelling to LA in July, and have been attempting to upgrade my return LAX-SYD sector from Y+ (purchased) to J. When I call I am told there are empty seats, but no more have been released for points upgrades. They told me to keep calling, which I can do, but I don't want to waste my and their time.
Does anyone have any info on how far out unsold seats are released for points upgrade?
It would be nice if such requests could be waitlisted. May just for Platimums :)

Rather than keep calling, keep looking for J award availability. When you see that an award flight is available then call the service centre to have your flight upgraded. Upgrades & awards come from the same availability bucket.

This is what I did for my recentl trip to LAX where I bought a PE ticket and wanted to upgrade to J. Just have to be patient and keep trying.

It will always be easier to get upgrade to lax than coming home!

Going over I am with my wife and son! Coming back I am just with my son, so willing to try for an upgrade!

Both straight out J award booking and J upgrades come from Z class, so if there is award seat showing online then that seat is also available for upgrade. Honestly, I don't like your chances for LAX-SYD in July...
