back again on my one way flight to honolulu.hawaiianwant $1014 jetstar $966 qantas says no ff seats around the 21st sep.BUT for 106000 each i can have two seats on their budget no frills airline.this will take most of my points.i think its disgraceful to treat a long serving member this way by wanting so many points.need to make dec should i take one of above or wait for any specials.ship sails from hono 24th sep.maybe school hol problem.getting desperate.

We went J on JQ last Nov. paid $2150 each on sale and received full Q award points and status points.

I honestly can't recall ever seeing special prices for September school holiday travel period to Honolulu. If you really have to go on these dates I don't think you will get any cheaper. Just keep searching QFF for award seats and keep your fingers crossed. Have you looked at other options such as via Auckland or Nadi?

As it appears to be school holidays its not surprising that one way fares may be around the $1000 mark. Then regarding Qantas classic awards its not surprising that they have already been taken. It is any seat awards that are available at 106,000 points. They give you an option, if you really needed a seat and had the points you could book it. I dont see anything disgraceful in the fact that seats on flights to Honolulu are priced according to demand.

Don't like the prices, don't travel at this time. Plenty of lower load periods to travel.

Sounds like the cruise is locked in so I'd say you just have to cop it.

Dunno how you can call Qantas not giving you a cheap seat disgraceful.

Live with it, you chose September for the travel you have to pay the September prices. Don't know why you think you are entitled to special treatment.

I would pick whichever flight suits me best. Also check matrix.itasoftware.com to see if there are any other cheaper options.

It is very hard to be specific with help when you have not given very much detail.

Therefore I have made some assumptions with the following.

SYD-HNL return for two people costs 144,000 plus $879.52 charges/taxes for a classic award (if available)

It is possible to get an any seat award for 2.5 times this amount of points and no $$ outlay. Considering the time of year that actually is pretty good.

Alternately I would probably find the best price available and pay $$ for the ticket.

I'm not defending QF just stating the facts. The big issue is time of year and availability of seats.

Also there is an increase in travel demand to the USA incl. Hawaii with our super strong dollar so award seats are going to be hard to grab.

I have also looked at hotel room rates and it is bloody expensive! I have been to Hawaii four times in the past five or so years and the rates I am looking at this year (and I do check alot) is at least 25% more than I have seen it in the past. Must mean demand is still up there.

The closest date to the 21st I can find is for Thu 13 Sep on a Classic Award for 36,000 points in whY plus taxes of AUD250.68 per person. Flight is on JQ metal ie QF283 SYD/HNL 1800/0745. You could book this then set some flight alerts in Expert flyer for all the dates between 14 & 21 Sep for X class on both QF283 (JQ metal) & QF3 (QF metal).

I have cut and pasted the fare conditions from the Classic Award info. The way I read it is that you can change the date of the flights should seats become available on a flight between 14 & 21 Sep & the ticket would need to be revalidated. However, I would ring QF & confirm the following:

a) are there any fees applicable to the reval of the ticket if changing the date

b) double check the points cancellation fee of the Classic Award should you cancel the ticket entirely ie is it 6,000 points per person?

Air Pacific have seats from Sydney to Honolulu on 21 Sep 2012 for $882. For 2 people thats about $150 saving (off the Jetstar flight which was the cheapest option). It does require two short stopovers though. I would suggest having a quick look at that if your interested.

If flying out of MEL is an option, you may want to consider Air Australia (Air Australia - Home) with their recently introduced direct flights to HNL. Their website is showing $789 for 22/09 and $739 for 24/09. Not sure what time your ship sails on the 24th but the flight is scheduled to land in HNL at 8.35am. They also have some $599 one-way fares in SEP but not around the dates you are after.

If you can get yourself cheaply MEL to NAN you could buy a BizSaver fare of FJ NAN/HNL via APW times 2050/0700 total journey time 8 hours 10 mins. Book it direct through www.airpacific.com. The airfare is AUD570.77 (FJD1079.40) for economy & AUD1024.85 (FJD1922.40) for Business Class - on the BizSaver fare.
