Hi

Looking at a 1 way flight from Honolulu to Sydney with a carrier that allows me to earn VFF status credits. However due to the high pricing for 1 way flight especially with HA, I'm also considering award seats and will forgo the S/C earn.

These are the options I found:

Paid Flights - Econony

Hawaiian Airlines:
HNL - SYD $1914 p/p for 1 way which in economy is a bit too steep for me.
Or HNL - SYD - HNL is $1400 (return) and I won't turn up to do the return leg to HNL.
Not sure if specials are ever released for 1 way flights ex HNL.

Air NZ
HNL - SYD via AKL 1 way $1009 USD / converts to roughly $1271 AUD by todays conversion.

Award Seats - Business class
I've come to realise after posting the question on this forum, that award seats on HA are almost impossible for 2 passengers in business from HNL to SYD or HNL to BRI.

Was wondering if anybody can advise whether I can use VFF points to redeem 2 award seats on the Air NZ flight by phoning Velocity ? And if it can be done, what is the availability normally like for 2 business seats if I book 331 days out ?

Also, are there any other airlines options I've not thought of that will enable S/C earn with VFF, without going around the world to get home to Sydney.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

I have flown the 3 different birds of (Air) NZ, can't complain, 320, 767 and the 777, both direct ADL to AKL, SYD to AKL, AKL to MEL. Flown in discY, and also premY, and J.
I think that they are the only ones that will be your price range, Aud$12xx per person one way from HNL to AKL to SYD.
DiscY and premY earn are pretty lousy re SC earn, but still, better than nothing.

One-way pricing is usually pretty steep on international flights. I know you say you want to earn VFF SCs but have you considered Jetstar? The 787s doing the HNL runs aren't too bad and they usually price a bit more reasonably.

I'm with Mattg on this one. You can probably get a o/w fare with Jetstar for $400 - $500. You can use the savings to do some flying in Aus for your VFF SC's.

A 'bit more reasonably' being about a 75% saving!

Thanks for all the replies. Think I will also consider Jetstar now as the saving is just to great to ignore.

Has anybody had any luck in redeeming business award seats booked through Velocity for HNL - SYD with Air NZ ?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

No chance basically on the NZ side of things

The only business awards NZ opens up to partners is the occasional DPS/PVG/HKG/NRT-AKL

When researching pricing on the Jetstar website for HNL-SYD, the price is in US dollars. Is there anyway website which books in AU dollars ?

I managed to get HNL BNE SYD on HA in J using AA points but that was before when you could fly LAS HNL SYD for 62.500.
now HNL SYD is that cost .
as it was a day flight, it wasn't too bad, I managed to watch 12 episodes of Hawaii50.
the seats are a shocker for long haul night flying though.

Sites like Expedia will bill a one way in AUD... They will just factor a small margin in for the exchange rate

I thought on the payment page on the JQ website, when you punch in an AU issued credit card, it gave you the option of paying in AU dollars then. That's what happened when I booked a AKL-HBA fare last year, they may have changed it now?

They do do that. However I wouldn't recommend converting the price to AUD - Jetstar make a nice margin on the exchange rate.

Did a lot of searching for this recently myself. Best option for 1 way is JQ. Yeah it's JQ, but the saving is so huge it can't be ignored. Could use the savings to go JQ J.
re: NZ, don't even bother looking as you will NEVER find award seats on them for that route.

Im actually doing SYD-HNL one way

the best way I have found so far is:
syd-NAN VA on points : economy + $83 (15% saving on points)row 3 :)
NAN-HNL via apia on Fiji air :business $1250 aud (much cheaper flying out of nadi than syd)I know, no VA points or SC....

with a stop over in fiji for a few days (and getting QF points and SC)

I was looking at JQ $1200 syd-hnl star class....but would rather a Fiji stopover. And not to fly jetstar.

Am looking at doing something very similar to this but out of Brisbane. I prefer the flying times too. Planning to use QFF for the Fiji Air flights.
