I am in Hong Kong for two days can anyone please suggest good shopping for electronics and sight seeing! Look forward to buying some good but cheaper electronic goods ( hopefully cheaper?) it will be my first time in Hong Kong as a traveller. Thank you

Re: Long transit in HK-question

Electronics? EBay destroyed that benefit a while ago. You can generally have the same item delivered to your door for a cheaper or same cost.

Re: Long transit in HK-question

Nooooo this cannot be true....

What about fashion then?

marki, the best place for Electronics is a place called the Golden Computer Market, but its not in any of the main tourist or CBD areas. As Mal has pointed out though, Hong Kong is not the place for bargain electronics anymore. You can get the same items of grey importers delivered to your door for cheaper than you'll get in person in Hong Kong.

What you will find in HK however is more variety than the stores here in Australia will have. So if you like to look and hold at the items before purchasing then you'll be fine. Be prepared to walk through cramped narrow aisle "market" style shops though.

One tip, do NOT buy from the shops at the TST end of Nathan Rd, they are known dodgy dealers. If you want to go to legitimate department stores, perhaps consider going up to Mongkok. Otherwise on HK Island itself, there is a Computer market in Wan Chai that I usually try and get to, not the cheapest prices in HK, but certainly a good range.

Re: Long transit in HK-question

Agree with golden. Bought a laptop power supply there a few years ago and like the place overall.

But yes. Know what you are saying. Laptops from some brands are cheaper in Hong Kong (as an example) but I wouldn't buy from markets but rather a reputable dealer (eg fortress). You pay a bit more but a better overall experience.

I've been quite frustrated this year with electronic gadgets. Wanted to buy a lens for my DSLR, first checked Funan in SIN, and just about every storekeeper was blatantly trying to rip me off. Tried the same in the c camera stores just near Lan Kwai Fong in HKG, much more realistic prices, however still not as cheap as I ended up buying from a grey market importer here. Arrived within three days, brand new item and all.

Same goes for a tablet I bought, searched across HKG, and looked in Low Yat in KUL too, ended up buying online from Bing Lee!

But I think part of the experience is seeing these huge electronic mega-markets, nothing like them here in Australia.

Agree, but we don't have the population density to support them, it was tried in Haymarket without much success a few years back. When I worked for Intel we had a matrix reporting environment, everytime we got a new HKG or SIN boss they wanted to know why my team only visited four dealers a day, explaining to them the geographical spread was hard, needless to say when they paid us a visit we always ensured a road trip was organised to Wollongong, Penrith and Palm Beach intregrators as part of a "normal" days visit plan.

This applies to a lot of things in Australia, and comparisons to how things are in Asia fail this test. My response is always, well if you're happy to live on top of one another, then yes we can do it, but if you want your quarter acre block....

Re: Long transit in HK-question

+1 for Golden Computer Centre In Sham Shui Po - it may not be massively cheaper than online or even in Aus but it's fun to explore and just a huge range of products

Mong Kok may be also be fun to explore for fashion shopping but be aware it is usually rammed with mainland chinese shoppers, have fun!

Re: Long transit in HK-question

Been going to HKG for years, real good electronics store is Global Audio & Visual 16th floor Yau Shing Commercial Centre 51 Sai Yeung Choi St Mong Kok go via MTR rail think its exit E2, very busy street, entrance is next Body Shop, prices will amaze you.

I love staying in Langham Place in Mongkok and went up the sub line to the electronics district last time. Lots to see but agree that eBay has removed the financial attraction.

I was recently in Hong Kong for another electronics fix and got myself to the electronics district and got an unblock streaming box which basically has over a thousand of tv channels even the one we pay for here in Oz, I am not entirely clear how it's done it even has German and Polish TV channels:eek:

In some cases it's accessing channels that broadcast unrestricted globally over IP (ie Internet)

Other channels are probably more nefarious.
Either VPNs to overcome geoblocks for FTA channels l,
Or accessing pure illegally retransmitted content.

In the past some of these boxes have just stopped working as the services they are using get shutdown.

Thanks moa999 I happy to say it has been working without flaw for several months and even watched WestWorld yesterday. (season 2). HBO is there too. Lots of China CCTV 1 and - 2 and CCTV3 and so on.

A little update to this thread, after moving back to HK I now realise I understated just how vast the array of products are on offer and the ease of purchasing things that normally one would need to wait weeks to ship from elsewhere.

If you have something in mind you’re looking for, do a search on price.com.hk to view all the merchants and their offered prices instantly.

You can then grab their Facebook page or website so you can WhatsApp or messenger chat with them to check if the item is in stock today and then pick it up.

As others have mentioned Sham Shui Po has the largest concentration of computer vendors but you can also get a dizzying array of electronics from homewares to cellphones to AV kit. Mong Kok is known for cellphones and the same approach works here also (be aware that most phones will be grey imports).

After comparing the ability to shop for a westerner in HK vs Shenzhen, HK still wins hands down for choice and availability of products and ease of buying.

Hi @marki I'm going to be in Hong Kong next month (so excited!) and that TV streaming box sounds awesome. A heads up on where you found it and what you needed to do to make it work when you brought it home would be great. I'm relatively handy with IT stuff, but if it's a simple plug and play even better.

What sort of price for this device?

What sort of price for this device?
There are several to choose from depending on the features the chipset and CPU and accordingly there is a price attached from anywhere around the 20-100 AUD
