Homework for children

I have NEVER believed that homework at primary school adds value to the learning experience.

Not a fan of homework, never set it when I was teaching except in the case of unfinished class work. Kids need time to actually be kids...

Homework during school term is often excessive. Having it during the holidays is just a joke. It's like the companies that expect staff to be able to drop everything if work demands it. It's a social problem that people should do more to push back against.

Even in the example of the girl in the article, even if she does love learning so much, I don't think that it needs to be in a formal school environment during the holidays. Surely there are other ways for her to learn whether it's going to museums or an art gallery. Something a bit more well rounded than just formal study and homework.

More homework for the illiterate buffoons that populate the Australian teaching profession? Highly unlikely it would be of much benefit!

I just hope the latest crop of school children learn to spell and count even if they have to do homework.

I used to do my own homework. In year 6 finished the maths workbook half way through the year. Teacher sent me out of Maths class as she couldn't teach me anything with the class that I didn't know and gave me advance workbooks to complete.

When I got to Year 7 the hunger was gone. I'd love to know what went wrong. I cannot remember.

We certainly don't appreciate homework being set during holidays. It takes no account of travel - we just had three weeks away and the kids had to cram their work into the last day before going back to school. It's hardly possible to take it along with us and zero chance of it being done anyway.

I can remember plenty of homework at high school (not much at primary) but never during holidays.

Reputedly the amount of homework is something that goes in cycles.

However those who are blaming the teachers & schools are in my opinion being a little unfair. I know plenty of educationalists who are very opposed to the amounts of homework they are asked to set but are forced into it because thats what parents want. Sure within any parent groups there are a range of views, but the "more homework" view seems to have the upper hand in our current parent community.

Only if it's "please define the correct use of your and you're" over and over and over again until it sinks in.
