With all of the adverse media about the situation in HK, the airfares are making HK look like a good destination for this counter-cyclical tourist.

Earlier this week CX fares were $581 on Skyscanner. Now VA are available for $515 return both for travel in the next two weeks.

Obviously loads are taking a hit but why would VA need to be lower than CX. Wouldn't they be able to leverage some margin from their domestic network and connections?

May be it's time for those who'd like to do a status run :) I recollect from an earlier thread that VA J fares to HKG ex-ADL are super cheap :)

These prices have been around for some time though - they predate the current issues you refer to in the media.

They're due to the competition in the market. As for VA being lower, Id say it's more because they're the challenger brand. Cathay can rely on corporate customers, plus HKG contracts, whereas VA unfortunately has less of that and so has to compete on price more.

That makes sense. I hadn't seen the fares before.

Many fares under $500 here:

Thanks for that link.

I've been continually monitoring early Jan and haven't seen much change on the accom front. I've changed my hotel from Causeway Bay to be closer to Central though, I didn't want to be any closer to the prime problem areas than need be. This is just a stopover on the way to NRT. I would have considered changing my flight (VA Freedom) but a J upgrade has already been locked in.

I think moving to Central doesn't make it that much easier as the whole Causeway Bay - Central area have been the epicentre for the last few months.

I have a 7 night booking at JW Marriott at Admiralty with my 7 night certificate, and now i am thinking whether i should move as Admiralty MTR has been affected by closures regularly.

It is interesting.

My company and most of my friends companies have banned non essential travel to Hong Kong for the time being, the only exception is our HKG based staff who are still allowed to travel in and out. We have started moving meetings and conferences to Singapore.

The longer this drags on, the more damage it is doing to a once great city.

I think the writing is on the wall for HKG as a financial centre.China will be trying hard to direct the business to a mainland city.
There is also talk of cutting the HKG $ to the USD which will not help.

CX with their daily flight PER-HKG are also now just under $600 and they have next to no competition on the route.

Can't find any stand out deals on J fares even with the promo codes for the next 28 days. Which dates have you looked into? CX @ $484 is an insane deal but will be interesting to see how low can it go!

No Chinese city can replace HK unless the RMB becomes freely convertible, the Great Firewall is torn down, English is widely used and understood, and the common law is adopted. I can't see them giving up that much control over a mainland city.
