Hi AFFers,

Hope you're enjoying the long weekend thus far.

I'm off again to HKG in the first week of August for a week with 2 nights in Shanghai for Expo.

Flying with VS on a Y Miles Plus Money fare - combined with the recent Amex MR transfer bonus I managed to get 21.5c per dollar for my points which I thought wasn't too shabby.

What I'm really after though is your thoughts on a hotel for 31/7-4/6 in HKG?:

I'm looking at the Accor Sale and the IHG F&F offers at present but a bit torn. I could go budget and stay in the Ibis Northpoint for $260 for 4 nights OR I could look at something like CP Causeway Bay for $690 OR I have access to corporate rates for the Mandarin Oriental that would give a total of $880 for the period.

Location isn't really an issue, happy to stay wherever in reasonable MTR range.

Also, any recommendations for Shanghai Hotels with Expo in mind?

Thank you!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Accor show rates as per person per night twin share, so its $106 per night in reality. For that money I would be going to CP or HIX.

Oh really? Each page is showing as /night rate - a dummy booking for 2 adults gave a final price of $260 including tax (50% sale)

I cannot get it at that rate despite it showing as $53, go for it if you can get it, no brainer for that sort of price.

Availability has gone it seems, other HKG hotels still have the sale price for those dates...doh

My advice is simple-Life is not a dress rehearsal-enjoy every minute.

I agree with drron... you are on a holiday, so stay somewhere that you will enjoy and remember fondly.

I would recommend you have a look at the Langham Place Mongkok - incredible hotel, fantastic club lounge, wonderful spa, and just next door to the MTR. The rates are usually pretty competitive too.

Re: Mandarin Oriental: never stayed there, but had way too many drinks there with friends one night, the bar was amazing.

Or if you want to stay on the island, Harbour Plaza North Point is good value for money and right next to a MTR station too.

You're a bit too early but when the Ritz Carlton Hong Kong opens its doors in December, that would be the place to stay! At least 118 soaring floors above Hong Kong, views would be priceless!

If you haven't already booked somewhere - may I humbly recommend the Mira Hotel?

The Mira Hotel - Modern & Stylish Contemporary Hotel Experience

Absolutely wonderful property, and won't completely destroy the budget like some others. I stayed there for 4 nights earlier this year, and couldn't recommend it more (I really need to finish writing that TR!). Would suggest booking through the Qantas website as they have a promotion on at the moment.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone :p

I've ended up booking 4 nights at The Empire Causeway Bay through HotelClub - the rate was less than Wotif or the hotel's own site and with 10 MR points per dollar.

Wanted to try and balance the spending on accomodation for the week - half 4 star and half 5 star.

I'm using one of my SPG Free Weekend Nights to stay at the W Hong Kong for my last night, now just have to find something amazing for the 2 nights in Shanghai.

Go for CP Causeway Bay... Stayed there a couple of times and always have a great customer service.

Agreed, I stayed there in February - the service is great and the rooftop bar very schmick.

Ah, seeing as this thread's pretty much done already, maybe I can throw my lot in without starting a new one.

I'll be in HKG from 22/9 for 3 nights. Looking to stay somewhere nice without breaking the budget (it's a stopover on the return leg of a 2.5 week Europe trip!)

I can actually get Langham for $160 a night through corporate discount, but not sure if that's a decent room or a shoebox.

Last time we were in HKG we stayed in this elcheapo place called Rent a Room - good, very cheap and clean, but not exactly roomy.

The Accor sale period finishes before we get there. Is late September a high season or something? Weird, 'coz we were able to book cheap QF flights through that period...
