Currently at the HI Melbourne Airport and totally underwhelmed and no help from the staff.

In 45 minutes the room temperature has gone from 18deg C to 18 deg C.

The best response I got was wait a while and it should work and we'll make sure for next time that you have a room where the heater works better and we can deliver you some blankets if you wish.

They have just delivered a portable heater so at least there is now 'some' heat coming into the room. I was offered two small bottles of wine which are absolutely no use to me as I'm flying international in the morning and with carry on baggage only.

If it was earlier in the evening I would have simply walked away and gone anywhere else that was warm.

[rant over]

Hopefully the room will now warm a little so I can get 6.5 hrs sleep before I need to leave in the morning.

Sorry to hear about your predicament travel can do that to people. i.e. Putting in a total unexpected corker.......can you ask them for a room upgrade? Of use The DYKWIA trick ( :D )

I do like a colder room as I do a colder cabin so would have taken it well.

Was the wine of any quality?

Last time I had an early morning flight I passed on the MEL HI, where I've stayed too many times, and stayed at the Sofitel. Had to get up maybe 20 minutes earlier and had to get a taxi in either case, but it was a lot better night.

Sounds like a plan Michael.

My biggest issue is with the cavalier attitude of the staff member concerned. .ie we'll give you some blankets. No mention of changing rooms or providing a heater.

I have stayed at this property twice in the last six months; on both occasions it was spectacularly underwhelming!

Only positive is its location.

In future, when required, I will stay in the CBD as suggested above.

One would hope that a Luxury Hotel would be better than a midscale hotel.

I used to stay at the HI but was also p..sed off by the service. The aircon is no different in summer. I now use the Parkroyal when I need the overnight stay. Better in all respects, although pricy.

Have had 2 or 3 overnights at HI on the past without issue, but not for about 4 years. Had already decided I'd be trying PR next time if the price difference wasn't too big...OP's post only serves to cement that idea.

Of course. My point is really that if you can afford it it is a better start to a trip. In my case it was FOC. Thank you Amex/Accor. :)

Stayed at this HI and staff were lovely. No cold room issues and this was winter.

Stayed at park Royal which was infinitely nicer but I was slightly peeved at myself as it was expensive and I was there literally hours (to sleep) before flying out and was thinking it wasn't the best use of money. Maybe I should have gone to ibis.

And if in town then you have to get up earlier and I like my sleep!

I have to admit I don't really tolerate the cold well, not sure what I would have done in your shoes.

I'm just grateful if they can at least get my name and IHG membership number correct, a feat they have failed on the last four stays, having had a run of two when they actually did. (Prior to the run of two was a run off 10+ when they failed.)

Fortunately the duty manager has promised me that it won't happen again, although to be fair the same duty manager made the same promise a year ago.

I know it is not the best but the park stay and go rates can be half decent, it is relatively inexpensive and it is convenient.

Also whoever they actually think I am seems to get some nice upgrades to the eighth floor. :p
