HI all myself my wife and our 12 year old Son are having 6 week holiday in Europe in September, Im starting to book our train journeys, with the help of people on here and the Man in seat 61 I think I have it under control. I just would like some advice on the Swiss portion of our trip. We will be travelling by train from Frankfurt to Basel then the next day onto Wengen,
We will spent 6 days in Wengen then will travel to probably Bern for one night then onto Paris.
Im still trying to work out if a Swiss Rail pass is the way to go, as we can benefit from it in Wengen with train journey to the Jungfrau, and travel on Cable Cars
Any advice would be apriciated

Thanks
Clive

I recently went to Switzerland for five days. I had a special promotion for the Swiss Travel Pass which was the 4 day pass plus one extra free day.

In hindsight I regret getting the pass as I was better off buying point to point tickets. This is despite the discounts on Jungfrau and First and doing several train journeys.

Buy point to point tickets is my suggestion.

You often have to pay for reservations when you use the Railpass so it is often cheaper to buy point to point tickets that include reservations. Just do some dummy bookings and see what the difference is

On our last trip we purchased the 8 day Swiss Pass 1st class ticket and despite being expensive I did the maths when I got home and estimated we saved about $100 each just on train fares then you add in the boats, buses and cable cars and I estimate a total savings of around $300-400 each. We did go on the Glacier Express which helped. If you are staying in Wengen which is one of my favourite places I’d definitely recommend going up the Schilthorn and Murren which is free with the travel pass. Your son will get free transport if travelling with you.
I’d recommend going on the SBB website or app and doing some dummy bookings to find out if the Swiss Pass works for you

I booked some kind of Swiss rail pass that gave me 50% off every fare I subsequently booked. That worked better for me than the passes that were valid for a fixed, small number of days. I booked it on the Swiss Rail website and was able to print it out in Australia and take it with me (SO much easier than the Deutsche Bahn nightmare of waiting for them to post a pass to you by international snail mail).
