Hello. I'm Andy, QF PS+QP.

I travel mostly during the August-March period to watch the Melbourne Victory play the Hyundai A-League season, however I'm now being required to travel to Melbourne once a month for around 12 months for workshops and placement in the uni course I'm studying.

I joined mostly to see if I can pick up and hints and tips to make travelling a bit more comfortable, however when you stand 6'7" off the deck travelling is rarely a comfortable experience...

From another Brisbanite, welcome to AFF:!:

Hope you will come to enjoy (and gradually understand!) our community.

Welcome AiB!

Nice to see another HAL fan who travels around supporting their team! I'm a massive Glory fan myself...we're coming up against your boys this weekend. Great win in the derby btw...I don't like the heart!!

I'm 6'5" myself so I know what it's like being crammed in seats...makes travelling to Wellington for games that little bit more difficult, but more rewarding when you get there!

Welcome!

If you're really keen to get a lot out of this board and community then prepare for some long nights reading... :D

Thanks for the welcomes!

A Purple Perth Person! Not by any chance a Shed lad are you? I'd say they have the second best home end support in the league. After I do Gosford NYE away this year Perth and Welly away will be the only two I haven't done.

As for the derby it was a good match. I flew down but only saw around 20mins/up to the second goal. Things got crazy in the Terrace and I got taken away by ambulance. Nothing major in the end and I'm still rocking, but accidents do happen when everyone jumpos around.

So as most bne-syd flights are 767 and mel flights are 737-8, (hope i got that right) what is the best seating for those over say 6'2?

So this is what I've discovered flying Y class, which is for the moment the only way I can afford to fly...

QF 763 - 34B or J
QF 738 - 13/14C or 13/14D
QF 734 - 11/12C or 11/12D
QF DH8 - Row 1 or bust.
JQ 320+321 - 1C

QF usually have a 31" pitch in Y on the 738/734, which I can do uncomfortably for very short flights. JQ have a 30" pitch which I physically can not do, therfore if I am forced to fly JQ I'll cough up the extra to get 1C. I actually prefer riding the council bus to flying JQ; despite the sleeping homeless guy and the suspicious puddle in the corner the council bus feels like it has some class and decorum... ;)

I was forced to sit in 14C BNE-TSV (QF 734) once while a bunch of 5'11" morons got reseated into the exit rows once onboard. Nearly made me rip 13C off the floor and throw it out the window to get some legroom. I spent most of the trip standing in the rear galley speaking with the FAs just so I didnt have to sit down.

Anyway, I hope to learn a lot from my time here and share whatever I can offer.

I hope you are not saying that short(er) people are morons. ;) Or did something happen on that flight?

I sympathise with tall(er) people but I am entitled to an exit row (yes I am only 5' 9") as much as anyone else. Or are you saying that exit rows or bulkheads should only be for tall(er) people.

Oh no, the height doth not maketh the moron, rather the attitude and demeanour...

I blame the FAs more than the morons themselves: I did arrive 3 hours before my flight to request the exit but was told in the QP that they were full. I asked again at the gate and told the same thing. I then asked the CSM and FAs, letting them know I was 6'7" and travelling ain't easy and was assured that they'd be reseating people anyway and they'd help me out. They didn't.

I understand that everyone pays their cash and everyone poops sitting down however what ever happened to courtesy? If you're a shorty and don't really need the legroom then why make the giants suffer? It's like the bus or train: I pay the same fare as everyone else but I'll still stand and let the senior citizens, women et al take a seat.

A shed lad at heart but rarely stand there. Always with them on away trips though! They do their best for the boys...Definitely Victory have the best home support in the league then Wellington and Perth imo. Never had to leave the ground in an ambulance and never hope to...good to hear all is ok:p

There's not a dignity, honour or common courtesy thing associated with giving up a seat for an elderly, woman et al in a bus or train compared with a "short" person giving up their exit row seat for a "tall" one. Until it becomes more of a social norm in a similar fashion or part of the honour code, you won't find that it happens. And until that change happens, it won't be considered (from a greater social point of view) that not giving up your seat for a "tall" person is discourteous.

Mind you, with all this paid exit row thing going around the world, it's a riot at the moment when people can sit in exit rows and yet be not up to the required standard (safety wise) to sit in it! What if a frail person sits in an exit row? Would a tall person be right to ask them to be displaced so they could sit there (which "violates" the elderly person rule)? After all, they may not be able to comply with the safety requirements of the exit row (e.g. help with an emergency, lift and dispose a door which is 22 lb in weight, etc.).

Paying for an exit row is almost certainly cheaper than upgrading to premium classes, and many people take this view. If someone taller wants it because they can't take their regular seat, it'd be a case of "too bad, so sad...next time book faster and/or pony up the extra cash", and as I said, that's not socially unacceptable / frowned upon at the moment. There are plenty of people who will "carefully" select an exit row for extra comfort (using their status, paying for it or being ultra-quick) so they can enjoy their flight. It wouldn't matter if you approached them and you were tall, short, fat, thin, long legged, short legged, old, young, religion, race.... most of them most of the time wouldn't be giving up that seat easily at all, even with some "compensation".

I know at least one member of AFF who pays for premium class all the time because they are tall (Y pitch has scared them off). But not everyone can afford to pay for premium class all the time.

It's odd that aircraft designers have never considered that people would become much taller. Some of the Asian carriers (with 32" - 34" pitch) had a headstart for a long time, but a lot of carriers around the world still set at a "standard" 30" - 31" in most rows.

At a mere 1.75m tall, I'm not a tall person (not a very short person by any means), so I feel fairly comfortable no matter where I sit (although that's no excuse for not shaking the legs once in a while). Gee, we could start a new topic on all this discussion...

Your comments are fair but you also need to look at the other side of the coin.

You say you have an uncomfortable flight if you do not sit in an exit row. Extremely fair comment and I totally understand.

Now as I mentioned I am only 5' 9" and I cannot have a comfortable flight if the person in front reclines. It is that simple. The person in front reclines and my flight is ruined.

So I hope you can excuse my ignorance and common courtesy when I do not hand over my highly sought after exit row or bulkhead as I am extremely selfish....

Re: Paid exit seating. I wish QF would start this on domestic flights! I have nil problem with this and see that it would solve plenty of arguements and debates.

Re: Paid exit seating and people who don't meet the safety regulations. Plain and simple, airlines have the legal responsibility to do ensure that their pax meet the requirements. Yes, I know they often don't and you end up with nanna who clearly can not lift a 35kg exit door in 13A, but when things go south and people die it'll be their cough for cutting the corners.

Re: Paying for J for comfort. I honestly would if I could. My uni flights I can claim as a tax deduction, however I can't afford to pay for J fares now despite getting the cash back later. As for football flights I can't justify spending that much on flights on my present income.

Re: Smaller people their comfort. So it's never crossed anyone's mind to ask the person in front nicely not to recline their seat? Or maybe just doing the old jamming your knees into the seat in front until they get the picture that the seat's not going back?

l get it: no one gives up their seat on public transport anyway so why should I care? Everyone else looks out for number 1 so why don't I? Society is becoming more and more selfish so why shouldn't I just jump on and enjoy slippery slope of decline? Because I'm bigger and better than that. If someone 6'8" needed an exit and everyone else was too selfish to give it up I would. If someone asked me not to recline my seat on a 14hr longhaul I won't. I paid my money just the same as everyone else but I believe in karma: if you put yourself out for others who need it you'll get good things back in time...
