Update: we have since been able to get two return flights to Japan (purchased April 2023) and pay for our hotel in Kyoto, all on points!

We decided to get a nice hotel for a shorter stay in Kyoto rather than a cheap hotel for a longer period, so the points didn't go as far - but we're happy about our decision :)
