Been about five years since I was at HBA, but am flying out of there on Jan 27 on a DJ flight. With no Virgin Australia Lounge, what are the food & drink facilities like in the terminal? My flight to MEL isn't until 10pm so was wondering what was there and whether anything would be open at 8pm bearing in mind it's a Sunday night, but smack in the middle of the Australia Day long weekend. Am I best off returning the hire car as late as possible and having dinner in Hobart itself?
The HBA website is next to useless.

My memory of the Hobart terminal was that food and beverage facilities, and just about everything else is rudimentary in the extreme.
Try a soft drink, lousy coffee, and a dry white bread sandwich.
I think you are right, have dinner in Hobart and return the rental car just before your flight.
Try Rockwall restaurant, I loved it. :)

Yes def leave the hire till as late as possible and avoid spending any time in the terminal if you can!
Have a nice dinner...loved "The Source" (via the fast ferry, Mona)

You wont get anything other than a snack in the terminal. You'll be pretty happy eating anywhere in town but another option is Barilla Bay, which sits at the end of the runway, along the Tasman hwy. Food is reasonable and it's heaven if you like oysters. Then it's just 2 min drive to the terminal so you could have a drink or two without worrying about breath testing. Just check if they open on sun nights.

Totally agree with the comments around Barilla Bay, although they are usually closed on Sunday nights I'm sorry. As for the comments around the breath testing, the HBA airport roundabout is famous for police presence, especially over the long weekends so please don't take any risks ;)

Back on topic though, there is a JQ flight around 9pm so with 2 flights outbound I would imagine that the bar would be open. There is very little in terms of food however at that time of night.

Being a long weekend, my advice would be to head down to Mures or the fish punts on the wharf and get some fresh fish & chips, they are open to a reasonable hour, you can get parking really easily near the wharf, and from there it's very easy to get on to the highway for the drive out to the airport. If you left the wharf by 8:30 and arrived by 9 you will make the flight no worries even with the dehire of the car. There is also an inbound DJ flight that arrives at around 11pm, so the rental desks will be open anyway hence taking the car back late won't be an issue.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Boof
