Check out priceline.com. I have managed to get 2 J seats OW, LAX-HNL-SYD for $1535AU each!! And once the booking went through today it shows up as F seats for both legs... Bonus

!

The trick is that it only seems to show up on certain dates/days.
LAX-HNL was Tuesday 30th Aug and HNL-SYD was Wednesday 31st Aug. I checked a few options for Aug and the Tuesday flight always came up - 16th, 21st and 30th Aug LAX-HNL and the Wednesday's 17th, 22nd and 31st Aug HNL-SYD all showed as $1604 USD.

So worth a look, didn't check SYD-LAX route as I already have QF J's booked with points. Details on how exactly to find these flights are set out below. If you have problems finding this then just message me. My TA even didn't believe me when I told her of this; even with the detailed instructions I gave her to follow she still couldn't see these flights. (had to send her a screen dump of the webpage to prove it:D) So if anyone has problems checking this then please message me.

The details for my flights which were entered into the priceline.com website were as such:

  1. Choose the flights tab then multi-destination tab
  2. Flight one is LAX to HNL 30th August 2011
  3. Flight two is HNL to SYD 31th August 2011
  4. Check the Passengers drop-down box for * Adults
  5. At the bottom click on "Click here for more search options" and check the class drop-down box to "Business"
  6. Then click search for flights....simple
I know HA isnt QF but for this price; on that route.....I think I hit paydirt

Its a good price for what it is. Hawaiian First class (they only have Y and F) reminds me of Air Pacific J - basic. Its no sky bed, but thats prob cheaper then oneway on qf.

not even close to air pacific - apart from the food it's pretty much similar to JQ starclass. Seats are 42 inch pitch (I think that goes up to 45 on their new A330s). And a digi-player for entertainment. The food is supposed to be good though.

While it is a great fare, a good fare for points earning would have been an AA YUP combined with starclass. AA 767 service with lie flat seats (although that does require an overnight in HNL). Not sure how that prices out these days but the AA/JQ combo can be around the $1600 depending on JQ sales.

I agree that J (Hawaiian call it F) feels like JQ *class, in fact a bit less. The food was great though. I was booked in Y and bought an upgrade at SYD and then again at HNL on the way back. I (or at least the company) paid about $1800 for the Y tickets and upgrades cost me $550 and $440 respectively so a similar price.

OT: I tried to get miles on UA but much to my frustration it was refused because you only get miles on Hawaiian when the flight is in conjunction with a UA flight. - A bit stupid given the UA flight from SYD to HNL goes via LAX! An appeal to this as illogical got me nowhere
