I am booked on QF25 in January arriving Haneda international terminal 1 at 5.30am and need to transfer to domestic terminal D1 for a 7.30am flight to Chitose.

Will I have enough time to clear customs, shuttle, then check in at the domestic terminal? Any thoughts on the best transfer -- bus, train or monorail?

The airport website has some information. The bus looks like the most straightforward and most frequent transfer option. Assuming the formalities are not too slow then 2 hours should be heaps.

Thanks, Chris, just wondering if it's a bit tight with little margin of error and not much time to locate & process the onward check-in

The I-D connection at HND is similar to the QF connection at SYD. After exiting customs, turn right and there are check in/transfer counters for both JAL and ANA at the end of the arrivals level past some baggage shipping counters. Do not head forward towards the trains/monorail/buses.
After checking in, turn around and opposite the counters is a security check and waiting room.
The buses here only go to one of the domestic terminals. There is a different bus for JAL and ANA.

If for some reason you can't use the transfer counters (I've never had a problem), the landside bus is the better option. Go outside to platform 0 and wait for the green bus. This is the only option to transfer back to the international terminal from the domestic, though on the way back, make sure you get the green bus. Other buses use the same platforms, only the green one goes to the international terminal.

If QF25 is on time, there shouldn't be any issues at immigration. You might meet with JL36 from SIN and NH840 from HKG. There aren't many flights arriving around the time QF25 does. Your main problem will be if QF is ~30 mins early or the ~5am flights from LAX, SFO, HKG, TPE, and the new NH SYD flights are late.
Every time I've been through HND International, it's never taken more then 20 minutes to get from the aircraft to landside.
The times I've connected to domestic (normally JL36 or 38 through HND to ITM), I'm in the Domestic Sakura Lounge within 50 minutes of leaving the aircraft.

Many thanks, Himeno, for your very detailed information. (I did not realise that my domestic check-in would be on the arrivals level just after customs, nor that there is a JAL connecting bus.) I now feel a lot more comfortable about the connection.
