I'm 72 years young :) and travelling on my own leaving Brisbane to Vancouver with Air New Zealand,, I have a 3 hour layover in Auckland... I would like to purchase a bottle of Bundaberg Rum for my Canadian friends as a gift.I am not familiar with the layout @ Auckland so my question is...

Can I make a Duty Free Purchase whilst in transit at Auckland without leaving the transit area.. I don't want to make a purchase and have it confiscated..

Thank you for being patient.

Sincerely

When you transfer in Auckland, you'll proceed through security screening before being deposited back into the departures level. From here, you should be able to purchase duty free where it will either be OK for you to carry onboard or it will be delivered to the gate where you will pick it up as you board. (Someone else here can confirm the definite protocol).

I don't know if Bundy Rum can be bought in AKL. Can someone confirm?

This page on NZ's website may help clarify things:

Restricted Items - Cabin Baggage - Baggage - Travelling - Air*New*Zealand - Australia Site

Of course, I don't know if NZ's information is up-to-date and accurate. Where do people normally go to get the most reliable, up-to-date information on these things (if it isn't necessarily the website of the airline)?

Is it AKL-LAX-YVR or AKL-YVR nonstop? If nonstop there's no issue, if there's a LAX transit, then it could be problematic with re-screening at LAX.

;);)

Thank you all for your reply... I can't imagine what my clothes would smell like if I put the " Gift" into checked luggage:D:D.

I looked online and yes I can buy Bundy in Auckland.. so will wait till then.. if I bought it in Brisbane I would have to drink it before arriving in NZ otherwise it could be confiscated...... LOL..

Again my Sincere appreciation for your help..

Grandma.

Welcome to AFF.

I have never seen bundy at AKL duty free, that's not to say it isn't there, but I personally would be buying it in BNE.

We (mrs) carried 2 bottles of Russian gut rot in fragile bulbous bottles across china and back to Mel via SYD only to have one bottle broken on the final leg :( The winos hanging out at MEL were eyeing up our luggage ;)

I have however carried good quality bottles in luggage many times before with no problems

On a different note, grange is good buying at the wine shop at AKL :)

Have fun

Apparently its one of their best sellers!

Rum

NZ28.72 (AUD22.89) for 1.125 litre versus BNE $29.99 for 1.125L, I think I can see why!

I am not much of a rum drinker myself but I am surprised at the price difference, at least its easier these days to work out where to get your DF from if you dont mind the hassle of LAGs and carrying/storing the damn stuff.

...

Thanks to everyone else who responded... just one comment to munitalP... Yummmmo... the mix of Mint, Soda and Lime sounds great must try that one come Summer...;) have yout tried OP with Pineapple Juice, & lite Coconut milk on Ice... To die for... LOL

Yes but definitely not Bundy used there.

White rum only for a Mojito (and if you're going to be a real Cuban, Mineral water instead of Soda water) ;)

Actually, a mojito can be mixed in many forms. I tried a mid rum mojito just this week and it was fantastic. I have also tried them with different fruits such as passionfruit, mango and strawberry.

the drink is claimed original by Bacardi, see bacardimojito.com and they offer many differing recipes for this drink as well. A mojito cant be boxed...

I'm just going on someone's first-hand experience of having Mojitos in the birthplace of them, Cuba.

They make them there with Havana Club and Mineral Water, not Soda.

Bacardi may have invented it, but it's one of those drinks with a lot of variations and obviously, a lot of them are good (what's not to like about mint/lime/sugar/other stuff in alcohol :))
