So I've been trying to get a lot of points over the past year and would like to use it to fly First Class or Business Class. Would love to do US but that seems hard to organise. The easiest appears to be Singapore which I would like to visit. Currently have 140k Qantas and 340k Velocity so will need another 40k Qantas to make it work.

Do you think the following is worth it for a first timer and likely to be the last as well. Would be me and the wife.

Melbourne to Singapore on Emirates First Class using Qantas points. 90,000 + ~$320 per person.

Return via Singapore Airlines First Class by transferring Velocity to KrisFlyer. 86,000 Velocity points + $250 per person.

Are flights that only last 8 worth it? Will I really get to enjoy the first class experience and also get to enjoy some sleep?

Thanks,
Thanh

Personally I find the best way to enjoy the first class experience is to be awake!

Hi Thanh,
F on EK is much easier to find award seats on than QF IMHO.

Additionally, for the same mileage as SIN-MEL in F on SQ, you can also do HKG-SIN-MEL, both in Suites/First - so keep that in mind as well, especially if you want to 'maximize' your F experience.

I also agree with burmans that a daytime flight would be best of enjoy F!

ps. Chuc mung nam moi ;)

Wonder why my response never posted.

Thanks guys for the advice. HKG trip sounds good will definitely look into that.

Just checking out the Emirates availability via Qantas points. Looks like the flight will be

Departing 1800 Melbourne arriving 2350 Singapore - does that sound good? Will my partner get enjoy the caviar on board (not for me, lobster maybe:D )

Chuc mung nam moi to you too Daniel!

Emirates will serve Caviar on that flight. The great thing about the EK website is that you can search up the menu of your flight (from one month onwards I think ..)

As for onboard Lobster, you might have to try SQ's Book the Cook. The Boston/Classic thermidor is usually on point!
If you're lucky, there might also be lobster in 'The Private Room' menu in SIN.

Thanks Daniel, will definitely remember the Book the Cook now.

Any thoughts on whether it's worth a 12 hr layover in Singapore to take the A380 in First Class to Sydney instead of a 777-300ER to Melb?

Although that A380 flight from SIN to SYD is at 1AM so maybe not.

Book an airport hotel for 6-8 hrs, have a snooze, use the pool, then spend 4-6 hrs drinking PH champa's & gourmet in TPG.

While some will say 6+ hrs in the TPR is a bit much, having done more than my share of 10+ hr layovers whilst flying on the cheapest LCC & no status Y flights on a Thread bare budget, any TPR complaints are definitely "First (Class) World Problems.

Defiantly breaking up the trip in Singapore is a good option as well as maximising your flight time by heading to HK. I would recommend staying at the Capri at Expo, large rooms, great location & free airport shuttle makes it convenient.
