Good J prices: EY MNL-Europe rtn

I’m seeing $2k each way for J if I leave in December and return in Jan… where are you seeing these deals ?!

PR website has KUL-SYD for 3419 MYR on most days across December and January that I could see. That’s just under $1100 (some were around $890)
A return trip from KUL-SYD is going for 4978 MYR or about $1600 in J

That’s great for the KUL-SYD leg. Any tips on how to cover the SYD - KUL leg ? That comes up as $2k AUD for me…

They never have cheap fares the other way unfortunately. You need to find award seats, pay the premium price for J or consider a cheap Y flight

Just how bad is Cebu Pacific ?

Are we talking no shows / random cancellations like Jetstar, or just super no frills ?

Their seats are very uncomfortable and it's a no-frills service, but other than that they seem reliable enough operationally.

Ok so the earliest (direct) SYD-KUL flights arrive in KUL at ~6pm. Is a 10am flight to Europe the next day reasonably safe, or should I be looking at an evening KUL-Europe flight ?

I normally book the euro flights first,
I prefer day flights in premium cabins. On the late night flights, crew disappears and lights off, go to sleep!

Delay - seems like a reasonable buffer if I’m flying a major airline to KUL (Malaysian);

If it gets cancelled out of Sydney at short notice, then no. But is that common for a full service carrier ?

Hypothetically, let’s say I’ve left eg literally 24h buffer, the SYD-KUL flight is cancelled, so I ring around and find an exorbitant flight on another carrier at short notice. Would AMEX platinum insurance or similar usually that cover that new flight as the cancellation wasn’t my fault ?

I’d be fine with that. We have stayed at one of the KUL airport hotels a few times and no problems at all.

I don't know the PDS of that card sorry. You'd need to check in what circumstances they will cover costs. I believe I've seen PDSs which include things like weather and mechanical failure ONLY so in theory wouldn't cover airline errors.

Just did this - as my planned J flights for December got jacked up by $1k overnight (Google flights, so I don't think it was a website tracking thing...)

Looking at Y direct or close to direct for SYD-KUL as I don't think the family will tolerate any more legs/stopovers

How long do people generally leave this (in terms of waiting for specials or reward flights to show up) ?

Peak times like December as soon as possible, while you can never say never prices almost always go up not down and reward flights disappear.

okay, my time to pose a question if I may. I booked EY when they were on special ex Germany, routing FRA-AUH-KUL and back for less than 1,800 Euro at the time. Outbound in late May, arriving KUL at 8.05, inbound mid-September, departing KUL at 9.45. This makes for two trips to Europe and to get back to and out of SYD, I picked up PR Business for $1,300 return.

PR has now cancelled the last flight of the day in September and instead of arriving at KUL at 11.45pm the day before the EY flights to FRA, they rebooked me to arrive in KUL half an hour after that flight departs. Obviously separate tickets and looking back, maybe I should have left more than ten hours but this is too late now.

I got in touch with PR to ask whether they will cover my hotel for the night, as the schedule change resulted in an overnight stay in MNL. One question would be if I would have to pay that travel/ departure tax if I enter the country and stay close to the airport, rather than just transiting?

The other option is to change my EY flights - they change flight times by ten minutes every few weeks so I can rebook to the evening flight ex KUL without penalty. But again this would require an overnight stay in MNL and I am unsure about the tax.

The other option is to cancel the second flight (SYD-MNL-KUL) and rebook on the cheap Air Asia/ MH direct flight, to give me an overnight stay in KUL before the EY departure at 9.45am. I hope this makes sense, apologies for the long message.

On seperate tickets I’d be very surprised if PR would want to have anything to do with your scenario and it sounds harsh but I seriously doubt they will care about your situation as to them you simply have a return fare booked and that’s all. I’d suselect you will need to provide your own hotel and also pay any relevant taxes as you will need to enter the Philippines.
What are the fare rules on your PR tickets?
Will they allow you you to rebook, reschedule or even cancel without penalty?
Personally I’d be happy with a night in Manila and would wear the costs but everyone has different priorities, budgets or time schedules

I think the 777’s have a tired cabin and I personally try to avoid them but some people don’t mind them
