From May 5th, GE members who earn more than the 1350 SC's during a re-qualification year can have the excess SC's applied toward their next re-qualification year.

If they earn more than 2000 in a re-qualification year, then a year of GE status is "banked" and would be applied if ever they fail to re-qualify GE. There is no "limit" to the number of years that can be 'banked'.

The change is now listed in the T&C's:
...
5.4.1 Effective from 5 May 2011, if you are a Member who has a current Gold Elite Tier Status held for more than 12 months, any Status Points earned in the immediately preceding Requalification Period that are in excess of 1350 Status Points but are less than or equal to 2000 Status Points, can be counted towards re-qualification for Gold Elite Tier Status for the current Requalification Period. The maximum number of Status points that can be carried forward from a immediately preceding Requalification Period is 650 Status Points. Only Status Points earned in the immediately preceding Requalification Period can count towards Gold Elite Tier Status re-qualification.
For example,
Requalification Period 1: Gold Elite Member earns 1600 Status Points in this Requalification Period. 250 Status Points may be carried forward for the following Requalification Period.
Requalification Period 2: Gold Elite Member earns 1200 Status Points in this Requalification Period. To re-qualify for Gold Elite Tier Status, 150 Status Points of the previous Requalification Period are applied.
Requalification Period 3: Gold Elite Member earns 1300 Status Points in this Requalification Period. No Status Points from the immediately preceding Requalification Period can be carried forward for this Requalification Period.
5.4.2 Effective from 5 May 2011, if you are a Member who is a current Gold Elite member for more than 12 months and have earned over 2000 Status Points in your current Requalification Period, then you will be entitled to a complimentary year of Gold Elite Tier Status. This complimentary year of Gold Elite Tier Status is not transferable and is not redeemable for cash. The complimentary year of Gold Elite Tier Status will automatically commence on any Gold Elite re-qualification date on which you do not have sufficient Status Points to re-qualify for Gold Elite Tier Status. You may earn one complimentary year at Gold Elite per membership year. There is no limit on the number of complimentary years of Gold Elite Tier Status for which you can qualify.
5.4.3 Gold Elite members may not rollover Status Points and earn a complimentary year at Gold Elite in the same membership year. For example, if you earn over 2000 Status Points, you will automatically earn a complimentary year at Gold Elite. This benefit will apply instead of "the rollover" benefit stated in 5.4.1 above.

That’s a pretty cool benefit and for true frequent flyers would no doubt lead to effectively lifetime status, depending on how long they live :p

Certainly encourages you to keep your flying credited to them, rather than switching. Nice job by ANZ!

Nice benefit - probably a world first at that.

Essentially it halves the effective NZ GE requalification rate (even more so if you keep getting 2000 status points in subsequent years, thus banking another free GE year).
