My daughters (soon to be ex I think) boyfriend just purchased 2 Malaysian Airlines tickets to Europe for October. Daughter has told him she doesn't want to go which I must admit I am not too unhappy about

Question is, can he get a refund for the tickets seeing as they were Sale tickets and though I haven't seen the tickets apparently do say non refundable. I have checked the MA website and it isn't really clear whether he can get his money back, there is actually nothing in the terms and conditions that differentiate between classes of tickets. If he can get a credit would that be transferrable as I might in a moment of weakness buy that credit off him

I feel a bit guilty, I think the daughter might have intimated that she would go but has now got cold feet. In saying that he shouldn't have rushed out and bought them without telling her what he was doing. If he can't get a refund the daughter is thinking she might have to go which is probably not the right thing to do

Look forward to all your educated opinions on what options he/they do have

He will need to check with MH on this. Most sales fares are non refundable and even if they are usually involve a hefty cancellation fee. He might be wise to check and see if theyre willing to do a name change if he can convince a mate to go with him. But in general sale fares are very inflexible.

As you say, it's almost impossible to work out for certain without knowing the fare basis on the ticket.

However, just as a point of interest, I had a look at the current MH sale fare rules to Asia (there's no current sale to Europe).

On the L class fare basis, no refund - use it or lose it, $400 to reissue the ticket

Looking at more "standard" fare rules to Asia and Europe, the cheapest fares had:
On the V class fare basis, $220 cancel fee, $100 to reissue the ticket
On the H and Q class fare basis, $150 cancel fee, $25 to reissue the ticket

I don't expect that there'll be any provision to change the name on the ticket, or to have the ticket reissued into a credit shell, so the only options I see are

- go on the trip
- cancel, and be prepared to lose the whole amount, or a substantial cancel fee
- find out some other place on the MH network that your daughter wants to go to, or that you'd like to take her to, and have the ticket reissued (still in her name) to a different destination and/or date for a (lower) reissue fee. Of course, if the new destination costs more, you'll also be up for the difference
