Geting the most from Velocity Plat upgrade from HH gold - diamond

I've been HH Gold since mid 2010 and thanks to the Velocity status match I can now use the offer to become HH Diamond via Velocity. It also looks like I'll be able to requalify for HH Gold this year under my own steam.

So my plan is to maximise benefits by requalifying Gold in 2011, then applying for the Velocity upgrade to diamond on 1 July 2012.

I'm assuming that (subject to 4 stays in 6 months = no problem) the result will be HH gold to July 2012, then HH diamond right through to the end of 2013, but just want to double check that I'm correct in my reading of how the HH program works?

It isn't clear if the HHonors status upgrade through Virgin works quite as intended. All the cards that people have received have been dated 31 Mar 2013 - the normal renewal date for HHonors members so you might get status through to the March following the year of upgrade. So there is the possibility that if you ask for the upgrade in April 2012 that you might get status until 2014...

I got the impression from the Velocity website that it's only a 6-month 'trial' Hilton HHonors membership?

In any case, I applied for it last week and haven't heard anything. Not even a confirmation email. Not surprised after it took three emails and several months to get my Velocity status match in the first place.

The Velocity website does say a trial for six (or twelve months if you have 4 stays in the six months). However the cards that people received have March 2013 on them.

The fact that it is a trial could be the flaw in my theory - maybe if you are new to HH or possibly new to status you get the status through to March following year of upgrade, but maybe not if you are moving up a level from Gold to diamond?

Sounds like an unknown quantity, but I have nothing to lose by giving it a try provided Velocity & HH don't discontinue the offer.

I was an existing HHonors member but only Blue level. All cards that I have heard about have 31 Mar 2013.

Received my card on Friday and it has EXP 03/2013 on it. I called HHonors two weeks ago and they confirmed expiry is 03/2013 as well!

I'm going to make hay with my short duration though! Diamond exposes a whole lot more availability for room awards!
