Hi All, first time poster, and what a fantastic forum this is, a credit to you all!!

Anyway my father in law and I have decided to take up Jetstars 2 for 1 offer and go to Tokyo for the Rugby on Oct 31st. We leave from Gold Coast airport and fly to Narita. We are also looking at Hotels in Tokyo.

I was wanting any advice from members regarding the Jetstar flights to and from Tokyo, any tips tricks etc.

We are also considering staying the Intercontinential at Tokyo Bay using my priority club membership. We are looking at a room with twin double beds on the club floor, with access to the club lounge etc. Again any tips tricks, advice etc would be great.

Also any general advice od travelling to Tokyo in late Oct to early Nov. We are only going for 5 nights.

Thanks All

Richard

Hi Ricardo,

Japan!

Depending on what you want to see/do/eat, I'm happy to give you a sample itinerary of what you are able to do for the 5 days. Plenty of stuff to do in Tokyo, lots of stuff in the surrounding cities too.

Never been to the Intercontinental though

Cheers

You may want to think about hotels in Shinjuku - Tokyo Bay hotels are generally accesible only by Yurikamome line, which is pretty expensive when you compare distance/fare to the regular JR lines.

The stadium for the Rugby is in Shinjuku which is a fair hike from Tokyo Bay and would involve 2-3 train changes. Shinjuku is conveniently located for sight seeing and nightlife and has all your major hotels.

I worked/lived in Japan until last year and know Tokyo pretty much inside out, so if you want to PM me with what kind of stuff you might like to see/do then I can hook you up with some stuff that is not really in guidebooks.

I looked into doing this trip. I thought that you can only match tickets as part of a package from the outbound tour operator. The package seemed pretty good value and include hotel, of course.

Shinjuku is your best choice and a direct N'ex connection from Narita.

We are going to be in tokyo again at that time staying at the Conrad on an award before my HH status runs out. There is a pretty good offer on the Narita express at the present-
JR-EAST:Suica & N'EX
Remember when getting the NEX you dont have to just go to the direct station-you can transfer to another JR service without cost therefore getting closer to your hotel.
Quite frankly I have enjoyed where ever we have stayed in Tokyo.Getting round is quite easy-using the Suica card you get with the NEX deal makes it easier.
Of course you dont have to catch the express. There is a JR limited express-the JR rapid airport Narita train-takes a little longer but is cheaper and for example I can go direct to Shimbashi station which is close to the Conrad.

There are lots of very good tokyo hotel deals around at the moment

I stayed a few weeks ago at the hyatt regency shunjuku. Got a really good deal off the hyatt site. very nice hotel, not the hyatt of lost in translation fame, that is the park hyatt just down the road, but still pretty good. I use the N'ex but the limousine bus service goes direct to the door.

If you plan to stay at InterCon Tokyo Bay - I suggest stay at the Intcont The Strings, about 5 to 10 mins walk form Shinagawa station, all undercover. Hotel starts from the 19th floor great service and has great views over the city. InterCont Tokyo bay is little out of the way.

Thanks All for your comments and suggestions.

We were aware that the Inter Tokyo Bay is a little out of the way but we got a club floor with twin beds for 24,500 yen per night which we thought was ok.
My father in law has been to Japan about 10 years ago so any more advice on trains would be good. We plan to go to Koyoto on the bullet train, do some shopping, Tokyo tower and go the the Rugby on the 31st.
I used the Amex Plat concierge to organise the match tickets which they have done and will get these set to the hotel.
When we get back I will post some info on the hotel etc, I also intend to use my priority pass for lounge access in Tokyo on the way back provided its in the same terminal. So if anyone has used these lounges or the new gold coast lounge any tips would be welcome.

Thanks all

Richard

Thanks for that tip. I'll have to remember it for the next world cup

If you wish to go to Kyoto, then the JR Pass would be cost effective. They provide for travel to Tokyo from NRT, JR lines within Tokyo and of course the Hikari Bullet trains to Kyoto.

We used them in April and saved several hundred dollars between us. You do need to obtain them before you go.

Mind you, 5 nights is not really enough - we did this and felt we need more time. (Ofcourse, we are going back early 2011).

Shinjuku is the go. Stayed at Hotel Century Southern Tower last year for 24000 yen / night but had pre-purchased currency @ 104 yen / $AUD
It is only about a 300m walk from the station. The only thing I found a little strange was the lobby was on the 20th floor but had never been there before so maybe it is the norm in Japan. Would definitely recommend.

if you're going to get Shinkasen to Kyoto, be sure to check out the price first.
sometimes the JR 7 days pass may be cheaper if you're doing a few train trips. doesn't cover suburban or metro trains tho.
you can check out the timetable online. its great and easy to use.
your JR pass covers the NEX as well.

Agreed, Tokyo Bay seems a little away, but if you're happy to travel, the trains are relatively easy. just check what colour your train lines are, that seems to be the key

ATM's work well in 7/11's. no probs using them when you need cash.

if you haven't got a 3G phone, yours probably wont work. you'll need to rent one for your stay. see Softbank website, have used them twice and you can pre-order so you just pick up at Narita when you arrive, and just drop back when you leave.

used QF lounge recently and it was very nice. food good, so was the Moet.
Using credit card, maybe easier if you PIN and not Sign, many Japanese places prefer PIN, and won't accept card if not PIN, this includes JR booking office at Shinagawa station.

Good Luck
