Gary-Chicago International Airport will again be without any airline passenger service starting in August, officials said Tuesday.

The airport’s only commercial carrier, Allegiant Airlines, which operates two flights a week between Gary and Sanford, Fla., near Orlando, will cease service at Gary after its last scheduled flight on Aug. 10, the airline said.

Looks like this may be the end of this airport, guess you better get in quickly if you want to fly in or out of it.

Interesting reading that they spend $167 million on runway extensions, hopefully that's a typo as otherwise it meant that every pax spent (either directly, or more likely as part of gov't funding) $15,904 on the runway project.

If it was pork barreling then no figure could be too ridiculous...

But more the case that you could build a decent stretch of 2-3 lane highway for $167 million let along a lousy extension to a runway for that...

PS I imagine there is nothing particularly amazing about this airport that will have people scrambling to be on some of the last flights???

Is the US still short of ATC thanks to the budget? Closing this airport may help divert funding to busier ones? Though I see it says they're on-track to complete runway extensions, so perhaps better to keep it running, otherwise it's a massive waste of cash.
