Foreign airlines eye WA regional routes - The West Australian

Foreign airlines could get special rights to carry domestic passengers from regional centres to capital cities - such as between Broome and Perth - as part of a Federal strategy to boost tourism.

However, the move would be subject to reciprocal rights for Australian airlines. It potentially would allow foreign airlines such as Air Asia, which offers some of the world's cheapest fares, access to routes such as Broome-Perth or Darwin-Perth.

Pressure to reduce Cairns airport fees- Local Cairns News | cairns.com.au

"... The white paper also details how Cairns and other regional airports will be allowed to entice international airlines without impacting on their rights to land at metropolitan ports.
These changes were announced by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd in Cairns last week.
Overseas carriers will be allowed to fly into Sydney or Melbourne, for example, without losing their current direct rights as long as their first gateway is Cairns or another regional port.
They will also be allowed to fly into Australia, as long as it was first to a regional port, and then be permitted to fly to another country such as New Zealand and the Pacific Islands... "
