Thinking of a somewhat spontaneous trip to DXB in mid-December.

What are the options ex MEL or SYD? Emirates is the most obvious I guess but any feedback of others who have done this route appreciated. For this trip I guess price is my main consideration / whY class is fine. I've only ever flown to Europe via BKK & SIN so have never actually stopped over in DXB.

The main options open to you are whether you want to earn points in either Star Alliance or One World.

With Star Alliance your main choice is Singapore Airlines and One World is Cathay Pacific. There are numerous other options such as Emirates as well.

You'll find the problem with EK to DXB only is their fares generally aren't that competitive and it can often be just as cheap and sometimes cheaper to fly EK through to Europe and use DXB as a stopover than it is just to fly to DXB.

I usually find SQ good value for money if its DXB only you want and are more direct than TG and the like.

I'm not really concerned with earning points (shock horror) as this is spontaneous and not budgeted

The direct flights to DXB flying EK are not too cheap so may give them a miss...looking to fly Dec 13-19.

I've done this flying CX DXB-SIN and then QF SIN-MEL
These were award flights booked through QF. I think this is a pretty direct way to do it and cuts the flights up pretty well.
Cheers

Consider also flying to Abu Dhabi - it's only a one hour drive to Dubai too and may open up some options.

Are you sure about this routing? Maybe DXB-HKG-SIN?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure the most consistantly cheapest flights from Melbourne would be:
1. Malaysian Airlines ~ $1610.00. Only 3 days per week - 18 hour journey
2. China Southern ~ $1730.00 (via Guangzhou) - Maybe 2 flights per week - 22 hours

My sister-in-law works in Dubai and normally flies Emirates. On a recent visit she flew Etihad in Y and reported that it was much nicer: wider seats, newer, friendlier, etc. Also a cheaper fare. Transfer from Abu Dabi to Dubai is luxury coach (included in fare), about a 60 minute journey.

Do note that EK use different aircraft types from different Australian ports. If your sister is located in Brisbane (as your profile indicates you are located), then she would have experienced EK's older 777 configuration via Singapore. From Sydney and Melbourne they generally operate their newer A340-500 type aircraft which provide quite a difference cabin experience.

So although your sister's comparison is valid for her experiences, it may be quite different for someone departing from a different port.

Looks like EK fly both the 777 and A340 out of MEL daily.

The Etihad option is something I didn't think of...I'll look it up.

Unfortunately Dec 13-19 ain't exactly off peak.
