While the downgrading of Thailand to 'Category 2' in aviation safety a day or so ago may not immediately affect TG, given that it no longer flies to the USA from BKK, it is a subject of media discussion. It is possible for countries previously downgraded to again become the coveted 'Category 1': Philippines was a recent example that took a few attempts before being again accepted.

Here is one article and below it what some may find an interesting discussion about flying in Asia, though we do need to remember that tens of millions of passengers fly in Asia every month and most (thankfully) have a trouble free (as regards safety) experience:

the vast majority of airline passengers will still travel according to BFOD and the cheaper the better. The significant number who still self insure when traveling attest to the twisted logic that nothing bad will happen because it has never happened to me before.

FAA Cat 2 isn't really as "bad" as people make it out to be. Nowhere near as bad as the EU version.
Getting put in Cat 2 by the FAA prevents the carrier from adding service or changing aircraft type, they can still fly to the US with existing routes. The EU version of the same rating outright bans the airline from EU airspace.
