News articles have appeared on the web that Florida has recently introduced a law that requires international drivers to carry an International Driving Permit.

Apparently the law is set to change again soon exempting English licenses from the law and the current law may not be enforced.

But if planning to visit in the near future do your own research...

Here's one of the better articles on the topic:

The Florida Highway Patrol will not enforce a state law that required Canadian and non-U.S. resident drivers to carry an international driver’s permit.

Officials in the Sunshine State said the law requires further review because it may violate an international treaty and enforcement was being deferred.

What international treaties might apply to Florida ( and other states)? Can't find anything about this topic on the DFAT smart traveller website United States of America | Travel advice | Smartraveller: The Australian Government's travel advisory and consular assistance service (The UK equivalent has much more info about road rules in each country)

well the FCO in the UK has said the following:

The State of Florida has suspended enforcement of a recently introduced driving law requiring non-resident drivers to be in possession of an International Driving Permit and a UK driving licence. Following the change, a valid UK driving licence, or licence issued by another foreign government or US State, is the only requirement for driving a car in Florida.

But can't see anything similar on any Florida Government site. Generally, IDPs are not required for Australians to drive in the U.S (However, some police may request them).
The NRMA has online the AAA guide to IDP requirements here: http://www.mynrma.com.au/media/AAA_Handbook_Jun.pdf (although it hasn't been updated for ages). It still lists an IDP for the US as "recommended"
