I flew on QF 653 last night from MEL -> PER via KGI. The deviation to KGI was due to a medical emergency over the Great Australian Bight. The pilot called for a medical doctor to assist with an ill passenger. Two doctors kindly offered and very soon after that we were diverted to KGI. From the map on the seatback screen, it looked almost equidistant from our position to either KGI or PER. In fact our bearing from the position we were at when we diverted to KGI was about 010.

All the passengers were most understanding and cooperative. We were on the ground in KGI for about an hour while the plane was refuelled, paperwork was filed and load balancing was calculated. Passengers were asked not to use mobile devices as we were not using an aerobridge. It was then another 45 minutes or so from KGI to PER. We were eventually about 2 hours late and finally got to bed about 3am Melbourne time.

I had been feeling quite unwell from the second hour into the trip which is usual for me when flying at night. My husband checked the cabin’s air pressure and it was down to 770hPa. While we were on the ground in KGI, I asked a flight attendant if it was possible for the captain to increase the air pressure to above 800hPa for the flight from KGI to PER. Either the captain kindly acceded to my request or the shortness of the flight meant that the cabin pressure stayed above 800hPa.

We were one of the last to disembark as I had to repack my CPAP and battery which I used for the second leg. When disembarking, the pilots and flight attendants said goodnight to the passengers and one of the pilots said to me “Goodnight Mrs. “sinophile888”. I was quite stunned.
