Flat Screen TV for $600 or less?

I need some help buying a TV.

The landlord has approved for me to purchase a new TV up to $600 (may not be a lot but should be OK for my needs) but needs to be a name brand and flat screen digital.

I really don't know anything about flat screen digital but I am guessing the price will rule out many name brands. Would this be something to get from D!ck Smith's or Big W? Agent mentioned something about sale at JB Hi-Fi but if I can get similar deal at D!ck Smith's or Big W the bonus points will come in handy.

I purchased a sony 32 inch LCD from DSE in January for $597 on behalf of the sister in law. It was cheaper than the same tv at JB. I'll have to check the model if you wish to know. But I would definitely check out DSE as it could be cheaper than JB.

Looks good to me. And it is only $497 now.

Only problem I see is the current TV is suspended from the ceiling. There really is no toom to sit the flat screen TV anywhere.

The few that I've seen have the capability to be mounted on a wall, suitable attachment points on the back. But maybe don't have the required wall mount bracket.

Ceiling mounts are not an issue, even for a 42", although it just may be too big for what you have in mind!

We bought a 40 in Sanyo LCD from DSE for $599 just before Christmas. We were going to but the 32 in Sony that was mentioned but could not justify the relatively higher price for the smaller named brand. We have used this with a Blue Ray and the picture is fantastic.

Not to mention the price of some of the mounts. If the total budget is $600, then the TV is going to have to be a lot cheaper to get a mount as well.

$150-170 for a 30-50" ceiling mount, I suspect a 40" may be too big however for the room, and there is always the possibility that the mount can be used thats already in place?

I did say wall. But really just intended to mention they have mount points on the rear as standard.

Thanks guys.

I have asked the agent that I may need new mounts and someone (electrician?) to install it as well and may cost more than $600.

I am not really sure of the size of the old TV. It is a TEAC and looks like a 51cm (20") TV with mounts/hinges on either side of the TV suspended from the ceiling.

I believe 32" flat screen TV will be more than enough but simply do not have the room to have it on the table. Perhaps I can use the same mounts in place at the moment but the flat screen TV looks.... well.... not as deep as the old TV.

Kogan is always a good choice and well pricd.

It is possible to buy mounts for a lot cheaper than the $100+ that the stores charge. We bought ours on line for about $35.

He would prefer the existing mounts to be used but if not possible he will pay for new mounts. They will send a maintenance man out once I have purchased the TV.

I am guessing the AWA model does not have in-built DVD player. I am not too technical when it comes with these things but is it possible to connect my laptop to TV to watch DVDs?

Brand name TV's for LCD/Plasma etc doesn't mean too much because, from memory, there are only 4 or 5 places in the world that make these products (eg, Panasonic, Sony, LG and 1 or 2 others). The rest are just re-badged and different quality control applied.

Get the AWA and avoid the Kogan. I've got a 32" AWA in my bedroom that's been going strong for about 5 years now, paid $1400 for it, can be had for closer to $400 now
