First to Economy "downgrade"

Help! I've booked LHR-SYD in F on MH a couple of weeks ago as a points redemption. I've just received a call a few minutes ago sayings my flight is overbooked due to "a group of politicians that are obviously more important than you" and they can "squeeze me" into economy. I've replied that is unacceptable, but I'd be OK in J on the same flight or J/F the following day, although that's not ideal.

Any ideas on what my "rights" are given iit's a redemption ticket? I'm WP with QF and VA, but no status with MH - although I fly them SYD/KUL 2-3 times a year.

If so then OP is dealing with Malaysian T&Cs and Malaysian law

Over booking occurs with all airlines in all classes. Last one for me was January, BA F BKK-SYD on a paid ticket! They wanted to drop one on our party of 5 (MIL) back to J - could have been worse, could have been me

I would call him and play the Lotto tune and congratulate him for his first division win. Before that make sure you tell his/her supervisor at work to give him the SH!ts at work and then watch the fun.

I'd call unlikely, or at least the resolution would not be "squeeze you into Y" and you deal with it. It'd either be bump to another flight or an agreed downgrade, in both cases with appropriate compensation.

At the time, "cunning" was not the word that came to mind - and yes, was not him calling me so I didn't recognise the voice! Did think it slightly odd in the back of my mind that it was an Australian accent - I suspect if I'd been called by someone from the MH service desk I might have been bumped from F to Y and not even realised what was being explained

That makes me feel slightly better! I'm now paranoid that with F and J sold out and no status, I may end up in 75E! (I've have a fair few J redemptions with QF and never had issues, so there's no reason for my paranoia...!)

Call up a few days before his next flight and tell him he got a free upgrade to Business class. Watch him go around telling everyone happily and get his hopes up.

When he gets to the terminal, watch as he gets crushed.. muhaha
