First time flying Cathay (Business) Brisbane to London - what to expect?

I would be quite surprised if they stopped you being business class. I travel CX J quite frequently, though F to Europe and often have carry on and backpack, possibly a 3rd personal item too if I'm pushing for HLO. IME there is plenty of space. Unless your 'normal' bag is not so normal.. should be fine.

Did I read it right that I can't buy alcohol at HK airport to bring it to Australia? Is this the liquid issue? If so then are perfumes likewise banned?

Marginally off topic....but sort of related. Flying CX J Syd to London, does anyone know if you can take a soft garment bag (i.e. suit bag) on as well as a 'normal' carry-on bag? The web site seems to say no but I thought I'd check on others experience.

I have even done it in economy, premium & J without issue between SYD & HKG with suit bag, laptop bag, carry on bag plus a plastic bag with paper and bits (headphones, tablet etc).

Must be under 100 ml like the usual LAGs rules

So Singapore is different to HK? There they will bring alcohol purchased in the airport to the boarding lounge. Not so HK?

The laddies are going to miss out on their wee dram of Whisky and Grey Goose then.

I went through HKG in Jan and they were still doing secondary screening at the gate. Anything over 100ml gets confiscated. I'm not sure if the shops at the airport do the bagging and delivery similar to DXB as I have never bought alcohol.

I went through 3 days ago after HK 7's. The shops do not drop at the gate and they still do bag searches at the aircraft door basically. However what I do is buy the duty free, put it in my cabin bag and then ask them to put it in the hold at the gate.

Problem solved.

IMHO,

Catahy doesn't respect other One World member benefits as much as they should.

HKG airport has many Cathay lounges so you can do some lounge hoping.

I have not flown J on Cathay.

this is an interesting comment.

I find CX to be completely the opposite... going over and above many other oneworld airlines when it comes to 'benefits'.

even though additional baggage allowance is not a oneworld benefit CX is fairly generous, their priority boarding works well, you get a personal greeting and bottle of water even as QF gold, op ups are given in strict order, with OW status right behind the equivalent CX status (i have several upgrades on CX for short hauls), and they give you free access to extra legroom seats (that Qantas charges an arm and a leg for).

I think CX is right up there in the benefits stakes.

I was over my luggage allowance today on CX J by a few kilos and not a mention of charging me. I was prepared to pay it. I'm only silver status.
