2 weeks ago I was in the US with a mate on a 2 week vacation. The plan was to visit Chicago and New York and attempt a status run during that time. I needed almost 400 credits to retain Gold status. I have read a lot on this forum about status runs on AA in the US and regularly looked up possible status run scenarios on the AA website.
The full credit of finding this one actually goes to my mate. This status run cost $833 (first class) and gave me 420 credits. That's about $1.98 per credit. Pretty impressive I thought. And the run took us to our next planned city without any unnecessary overnight stays.

Chicago - St Louis - Dallas - Tampa - Miami - New York (JFK)

The trip started around 9am in Chicago and finished at 1am in New York. It was a big day of flying. A couple of things I wanted to note about this trip:
1. We were travelling with 4 checked suitcases. So we only checked in as far as Dallas. We did this so we could take the luggage out and re-check it again. An AA employee told us that our bags might get lost with so many connections. From Dallas they were checked in the rest of the way to New York.
2. The lack of service on AA domestic first class. On all flights only a soft drink and a pack of pretzels were offered. On one flight around lunch there was a small salad. At dinner time.... nothing.
3. The AA planes in Tampa get turned around in 25 minutes! Passengers off... Passengers on... and off we go again. We were told to get on the plane while the cleaners were still cleaning. There was a storm approaching so they weren't wasting any time at all getting the plane in the air again.

2 years ago I paid around $9000 to fly first class on BA from Sydney to London to help me get to Gold status for the first time. This year I paid $833 to retain it on AA. I know which one I'll be doing next year to make sure I retain it.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Sometimes I think US "first class" just means you're first off the plane.

Well done!

I only make that 360 SC's ... [ord-(60)-stl-(60)-dfw-(90)-tpa-(60)-mia-(90)-nyc]¹

I suspect your DFW-TPA flight was an afternoon 'snack' flight and the MIA-NYC flight would likely have been too late in the evening for a meal service.

The other flights would simply be too short for a meal service.

North American / Caribbean Meal Service and Food For Sale Program
Complimentary food service is offered in First Class on all flights systemwide that have flying times over two hours and that operate within traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner times. Generally, a snack service will be provided on flights greater than two and a half hours that fall outside of a traditional meal time. A light snack may include our signature warm mixed nuts and baked on board cookies.

I was flying AA asked guy next to me what he did, said he didn't want to say, eventually he said in a whisper I work for AA!.

Serfty is absolutely correct. I mis-counted the status credits when I was reading my Qantas activity statement. Correct count is 360 credits. My mate told me that we could have achieved an even lower status credit/dollar rate but it would have required an overnight stay along the way.

When I do a similar run next I will most likely schedule it so we can have a stop overnight somewhere. I was getting pretty tired of it by that last late night flight MIA-JFK. It was a an old 757 clunker with tan low back seats. It was a continuing flight from Haiti. I think it would have been more enjoyable if we had have stopped overnight in one of the cities and arrived at a more reasonable time at our destination.
