Finnair Partner Award bookings

Just started exploring the Finnair Avios program, to get some data points on whether it is advantageous to book partner awards (QR, QF, AA, BA) on this program, as I had read recently that surcharges and taxes may be lower. I found the booking method unfathomable, it only seemed to want present AY flights, and even then kept returning the following message:

"There are no flights available for the selected dates. Please modify your search.

Please check the timetable to see when Finnair flies this route and try again."

I can only assume I'm missing something, so hoping someone with experience on the Finnair site has some insights. Thanks
