Fifth Freedom Flìghts

I know BKK-HKG is one of the worlds most popular 5th freedom routes

A number of OW carriers offer fifth freedom flights, this link lists intra-Asia ones:

Didn't know about the QF CGK-SIN seasonal route. Although not something I'd be going out of my way to do.

Funny, both lists missed JL flights. SIN-NRT is bookable online in conjunction with SYD-SIN (QF) and onto JFK via NRT. Nice status run in J. Selecting the 'bad' connections gives you half day & night stay over in SIN as well! Something on my 'To Do' list.

Might be a nice status run, but none of those flights seem to involve fifth freedom.

Ah, yes indeed.... JL just not trying hard enough!

CX overachieving in the region.

A fifth freedom flight is one flown between 2 countries by an airline not based in either the origin or destination country (ie the airline is based in a 3rd country), provided the airline has traffic rights. Emirates/Thai flights between Australia and NZ are examples.

As does SIN- DPS on KLM =-O

Perfect for weekends in Bali ex-SIN. J is usually reasonably priced too.

Jetstar Asia also have a few fifth freedom routes, TPE-KIX, MNL-KIX, BKK-cough. Some other obscure ones include SIN-KUL on Oman Air and DAD-REP on Silkair.

Just wondering if say CX flight between BNE and CNS allowed traffic would that, by definition, be regarded as fifth freedom flights.

Presumably not. Same as QF LAX-JFK.

Funny thing, BNE and CNS are in the same country, so if it were possible it would be an eighth freedom (also known as cabotage)

Fifth freedom also requires that the flight actually connect back to its home country. A standalone flight between two foreign countries would be seventh freedom. So
  • Emirates AUST-NZ that is a continuation from its home country is 5th freedom
  • If Emirates ran a standalone AUST-NZ flight it would be 7th freedom

usually very cheap, and economy is usually cheaper than LCCs! Same with the AF flight to CGK, premium economy is usually about the same price as economy on LCCs but with all the perks.

Yes, except for Fri night departures from SIN, with Sun night return from DPS. That can be expensive, although expensive enough to make their cheap J fares worthwhile I think. Used to be cheaper when QR did SIN-DPS at similar times as well.

One of the best 5th freedoms must be the AF First class SIN-CGK? Offers the new F suites.

I've just learnt this exists... I am totally going to try and fit this in sometime soon.

Looks like the J seats are average on the 77Ws, but those F suites... yes please!

I've done BKK-CAN on Kenya airways, was well priced and sort of cool ðŸ
