I guess this is probably one of the weirdest topic here, but it just came to my mind... how are ff points calculated if, God forbids, the plane crashes? Does the pax receive the full points entitlement, receive nothing, or get given points based on the distances the plane actually flew (say... if it crashes at half-way, you get half the points)?

I guess you are assuming a Hudson river type event where people survive? If the pax are dead then no points are earned as accounts on QF are cancelled on death.

And in such a case they won't need to wait to be notified of the deaths.

I was on a flight that had a mechanical issue and we had done probably 300 or 400 km and they had to turn around and proceed back to TSV then we had to get on another flight and they never issued a TSV to MKY return airfare on my statement.

But it was on the same flight number so I am not sure.

Should have asked when it happened.

I think if you survived a plane crash, the last thing on your mind will be your FF balance....or maybe, it will be the first thing you check! :)

The first thing on my mind would be how can I exchange my compensation for CL membership :p

Just laughed out loud (very loudly) in a cafe and everyone looked. Best thread ever.
Personally, I would be feeling guilt of surviving if others died... So maybe CL, free J or at flights for life and a few hundred million might help me overcome it.

Evil, evil panda!!!

determining monetary compensation would be a far bigger issue, but if you really wanted to push the issue, cl 9.3.3 of the FF T&Cs states:

9.3.3
Points may be earned for each Flight Segment travelled on Eligible Flights by a Member

(bolding mine). So the flight segment must be travelled. (segment is defined as travel between two points listed on an itinerary).

Obviously not getting to your destination would mean the flight segment is not travelled. Although you could ask for an original routing credit.

Good luck getting any points if your boarding pass is consumed in an inferno......

Doesn't the fact that the boarding pass was scanned at the gate trigger the posting of the points/SC to the ff statement?

No. The flight must actually register as landed at the destination or at least not be "cancelled", even after boarding. I had a BNE to SYD that took off and returned on BNE (didn't make the curfew). Nothing posted or that flight. But the following day's flight onto which I was rebooked did post as expected.

My experience is the same as NM. Had a flight PER-BNE that 45 minutes into it had to turn back due to electrical issues onboard, I didn't receive anything for it but did for the next flight they put me on.

Correct, the flight needs to be closed off as finalized for points to post.

About ten years ago I flew from MEL-ADL, we made our approach and the captain announced that due to fog in ADL we may do a go around. We looked out the windows, saw nothing but pea soup and were hardly suprised when the engines spooled up and we went missed approach. Then the captain makes his announcment: " we are proceeding to our alternate airport. The alternate for ADL is MEL!!!!" So we flew back to MEL, landed, refulled and flew back to ADL, this time with sucess. No prize for guessing how I was credited for this routing!

When the Egyptian government was overthrown recently, the Australian government chartered Qantas to evacuate Australian citizens from Egypt. A Number of those evacuated actually asked if they would receive Qantas Frequent Flyer points!

I all fairness I think a number of AFFers actually asked whether people chosen to go to the Qantas lunch in Sydney would get FF points, even though free tickets are excluded.
