Hi

I am about 9000 points short to get 2 adults an infant to the UK and return at the end of the year. There is one flight left just after Christmas to get to London. Do you think it would be wise to book that and wait until I have accumulated enough points to organise the return flight (there seems to be a few throughout january - we are not tied to one date). I should have the extra 9000 in a couple of months or sooner. Or is there another way to get points? I looked at Points plus pay but that only applies to any seat awards which is an absolute rip off on points

If I b ook the trip as two separate bookings - are my cancellation fees doubled if I have to cancel?

If anyone has anyone has had any experience in this type of thing - I'd love to hear it.

I know I need to something soon or we'll miss out completely!
Cheers:p

I would book what you can when you can, typically pre Xmas seats are harder to get.

I did the UK Christmas thing last year, and was booking each segment for the wife and kids as it came available (Dec '09 and Jan '10). It costs more in points that way but if you wait until the award seats for all flights are released ..... you may find that the outward legs are all gone.

So grab them while you can and look for a few free sign-up offers to top up your points (credit cards are a good source of these as long as the first year fees are waived). Then sort out the return legs as soon as the points come in, and you may still need to be flexible in routings and dates.

Good luck with it - I don't plan on trying that again for quite some time because it gave me many sleepless nights banging away at the Qantas website.

I would take what you can when you can. I did it last year. I booked 12 months out for each leg. Left before Xmas, returned late January.

What I am noticing now is there are heaps more flights available around that time when I was doing mine. Seems to be more flights available all over the calendar.
