EY paid upgrade at airport on codeshare

Has anyone tried to pay for an upgrade on Etihad metal at the airport when booked on a codeshare (in this case a VA flight number)? Were you successful. My wife and I are hooked in J and wondering whether there's a way to upgrade to F. We're not eligible for an if so airport is the only potential way. Any insights appreciated, thanks.

I doubt it is a public policy but I have upgraded before in the lounge when booked on a VA flight #.
They are even selling lounge access now so I am sure they will take whatever $s they can if there are spare seats.
