Experiences on Qantas staff travel

Yes if it’s in your employment contract. In my case it was after 20 years of service. However former staff have lower priority than those in current service. So you are further down the pecking order.
What if your name is Alan Joyce or Richard (Dick) Goyder? 🤔

I was at a reunion over the weekend, attended by quite a few retired QF (and a couple of Cathay) pilots. All have given up on staff travel for any sort of holiday, and are simply hunting down whatever deals they can find.
It sounds like staff travel is similar to award flights. You can fly anywhere solo. Perhaps even premium or business. But a family of 4 or more? no chance.

Not at all. Also, if you’re a QF club member either by paying, or status gives you access to a lounge, it cannot be used when using a staff travel ticket. No lounge benefits etc apply when travelling on staff travel.
Can someone travelling on a revenue or reward flight guest someone on staff travel into a lounge? I’m travelling later this week and coincidently, a friend will be (or hopes to be) on the same flight. They would love to visit the QF 1st Lounge!

As a Platinum member you're able to bring in at least one guest - though according to the Platinum benefits page, conditions vary somewhat depending on whether you're flying Qantas, Jetstar, OneWorld, Emirates or China Eastern. Eg:
  • if you're flying Qantas they can be travelling on Qantas, Jetstar or a OneWorld airline, again not necessarily with you
  • if you're travelling on a OneWorld flight they have to be travelling on a OW flight, but not necessarily with you
  • if you're flying Emirates or China Eastern the guest has to be travelling with you (with some other fine print in the case of China Eastern)
As your friend will be on the same flight, my read is that you should be able to guest them in. As far as I can tell, it makes no difference if your friend is flying on staff travel because they'll be in the lounge by virtue of your ticket/status, not theirs.

Maybe something for your friend to check with their airline? It might be a blanket ban on staff tickets using the lounge, however access is gained.

Yes, they already told me there was something along the line of a “blanket ban”
(which I was aware of) but I would have thought that was only applicable to using the staff travel BP for lounge access.
There is no restriction on guests for staff travellers.
Meaning I can guest them?
But being practical ... a lot of the time they are not onloaded until after flight closed ... so they are running to the gate and no time for lounge!
Yes, there’s always that issue flying “standby” although the flight doesn’t look particularly full.

May I ask what is an EF subscription ? My daughter has been offered staff travel, she lives overseas and I have a lot more flexibility to use it so they will put me on it instead but I don’t want to have to keep messaging my daughters friend in order to look for availability or to book my flights. Does an EF subscription let me do that myself ?
EF = ExpertFlyer

Correct. There is no ban, nor any restrictions on others guesting staff travellers into lounges.
This has been my experience also. The staff member I travelled with was a little unsure, but checked the rules and couldn't find anything banning it, so they agreed to be guested into the lounge. It was domestic so they didn't scan the guests' BP, which the staff traveler was relieved about just in case they had misunderstood something.

Epaulettes removed.
No, not me.
But a QFF staff with no epauletts has taken a J seat.
No tie no jacket, but it's quite a warm day in ADL.
And you know they are QF staff how?

They could be a family member or other on a buddy pass, or anything. Staff on pleasure travel are suppised to dress smart casual, but don't need to be jacket and tie.

Possibly another carrier?

I had a Rex Pilot shirt only recently on a flight, plus seen many Alliance pilots paxing around shirt only.
