So I'ma bit of a novice when it comes to QFF -
I'm helping my parents organise a once in a lifetime trip. I have a TA holding some round the world flights with Qantas an Luftansa.

I did a bit of digging around and it turns out parents have a whole stash of CBA credit card reward points ...

So a couple of questions
- can these CBA points be redeemed for QFF points?
- if so, can I use these points to upgrade my parents on the long haul flights? (ie. SYD - Hong Kong - Frankfurt - New York - Sydney)

Is it as easy as that or would i be looking for specific flights so that they are eligible for an upgrade?

Many thanks in advance!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Your chances aren't good IMO. Your parents can call CBA rewards to ask to have the points transferred to QFF however several years ago they switched to a system where you must opt-in to a frequent flyer program (for $10 per annum).

If this opt-in isn't done at or close to the time that the account was opened then they are highly reluctant to transfer points.

You need to opt-in to Qantas Frequent Flyer rewards with CBA at a cost of $30/year (it recently went up) in order to earn Qantas points through them. I don't think you can do that retrospectively. From CBA Awards, the only airline you can transfer the points to is Virgin Australia.

For the record, I would be looking to transfer the points to Virgin as that is much better value than redeeming the points for stuff from the CommBank catalogue.

But Velocity points will be of limited use to you for this trip. The only way you could use VA points to upgrade any of those flights is if the Lufthansa flights are booked in full fare economy (i.e. Y or B class). I'd say this is unlikely, but you could always ask your travel agent - they should know what I'm talking about. If this is the case, you can transfer the points from Velocity to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and redeem for a Star Alliance upgrade award - provided there are award seats on the Lufthansa flights.

(In other words, there is a possibility of converting those CBA points to upgrades on Lufthansa but it would require more effort than it's probably worth.)

How many points with CBA do they have exactly? If it's more than 1.3 million then they could get 2x round-the-world business class tickets with Star Alliance.

Agree with mattg entirely. Also confirming you can't opt in to QFF from CBA Rewards and then transfer CBA points already earned to QFF.
