Not really a question but more a comment

The family (2 adults + 2 kids) just purchased Per-Melb return flights with Virgin in November while using a promo code all up ~$2k then used 240,000 points to upgrade all to business there and back. Looking on the website that's about $14k of value for $2k and points. Given most of these points credit card sign on bonuses they costs about $300 in annual fees. No one else in my family seems as happy as me about this bargain. Just thought id share.

Tell them that they are now flying J to Melbourne but Y return home... Then they will realise how awesome you are!

Hope you have a great flight

Well done for scoring an upgrade.

A word of warning however. Last time I used points to upgrade, the cost of the upgrade was almost the same if I had just booked a reward fare in the first place. The value was poor IMHO. Things may have changed.

5500 points per person each way if I'm reading the table correctly. However if the OP needs SCs (and is family pooling) that's a different story

Having done the transcon with 3 kids in tow in whY (738) as well as J (A330), I fully support your logic and if you get an A330, then the whole family will think you're a rock star ... guaranteed! Copious quantities of brownie points for you, for at least 1/2 an hour or so! ;)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

It's 30k pp each way to upgrade from the cheapest fares - 35.5k to book outright as an award.

BTW, is it the A330? If yes, they should be singing your praises.

Im currently debating whether to use 70K points on 2 x Delta J flights - hubby is suffering from Point-Loss Anxiety at the thought but the saving is approx $1500 and we can make up 70K points pretty easily.

I had a super quick squiz and calc just to get an order of magnitude idea, PER-MEL, sniffed about with dates to get what looked to be standard but lowish fares on Getaway:

Freedom $599 x 2 = $1198 + 9900FF x 2 @ 2.5c - $149.75 (5x FF per $ @ 2.5c) = $1543
Getaway $269 x 2 = $538 + 30,000FF x 2 @ 2.5c - $67.25 = $1970
Elevate $319 x 2 = $638 + 30,000FF x 2 @ 2.5c - $79.75 = $2058
Biz Reward $18.5 x 2 = $37 + 35,500FF x 2 @ 2.5c = 1812

Going the old 'flexi' ... new 'Freedom' route is still the way to go if you value points relatively highly and are also willing to go through those few moments of panic as you convert from Freedom to J and hope-to-god that the Z class seats haven't sold out already (leaving you with a useless and expensive flexi ticket).

However, if you value points relatively lowly, say 1c each, then straight Biz reward is the way to go:

@ 1c/FF

Freedom $1336
Getaway $1111
Elevate $1206
Biz Reward $747

No FF or SC on the Biz reward seats though of course. I don't know what SC's are worth to everyone .. maybe nothing in some cases.

Yeah, i family pool. This will keep me gold and two trips to Singapore for work should get me Plats in Jan!

I convinced my wife, after this exercise that her signing up for the new NAB card and getting 75,000 points for $1500 spend was a great idea. Given the fee is only $150 its money well spent for our next east coast holiday upgrade.

Lots of our staff are doing at least two NAB CCs with their partners to get 150,000 Velocity points.
