Ok, got the car hired for this month and about to roughly do the below itinerary on a road trip of about 8 days - Obersalzbug, Neuschwanstein, capitals of Lichtenstein and Luxemburg, Lake Constance, Strasbourg...

Any other must see places along this rough route??

Love my photography and after some shots and just experiencing some stunning mountains and valleys, but also some other interesting stops along the way...

I would be making sure to spend some time in the Dolomites. We have had some time in 3 of the valleys & happy to make some suggestions of towns & day walks. We also spent some time in Garmisch & Oberstdorf and really enjoyed them despite the ordinary weather while we were there

The Swarofski museum is on your route just past Innsbruck. What about Hitlers Eagles Nest which is just above Berghof. Sound of Music tour in Salzburg.

Well, there's nothing much to see in Lichtenstein - allocate about three hours to seeing the two major towns if you are driving through there.

And remember they use Swiss francs in Lichtenstein if you are staying there, not Euros. They do take Euros on the street, but they don't have change necessarily, and expect a bad exchange rate.

If you are thinking of diverting into Switzerland, remember that to drive on their freeways you have to pay for the sticker on your car - it costs around 30 Euros and is good for a whole year afterwards.

Innsbruck and Luxembourg are treats.

When you get to Munich, if you still have your car and need to park it, the hotels in the western side of the city seem to all be in sort of a seedy red light/sex district, while the eastern side where we stayed was really nice. For an experience that you will never forget, in a somber sobering way, Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Park only a few kilometers out of Munich is definitely worth a visit.

Renato

Near Obersalzberg I can highly recommend the boat trip on Lake Konigsee. It runs several times a day from the docks in Konigsee up the lake with a stop at picturesque St Bartholomina church. Incredibly scenic and on the way the skipper stops the boat and plays a horn across the lake, the echoes back from the walls are extraordinary! I wish that I'd had my current camera when we visited the place.

Around Munich I had an enjoyable day trip to Andechs Monastery, which is also a bierhaus. S-Bahn to Herrsching and then an easy walk to "Kloster Andechs".

Sound of music tour in Slazburg was a highlight. The tour guide we had was sooo camp in English, but in german - not at all. Clearly loved the subject. The tour gave a great look at scenery.

I also enjoyed Bamberg for a day visit. But that is entirely in the opposite direction.

the Eagle's nest is worth a visit, if you have time. Interesting history. the German's don't really know it as the Eagle's Nest, instead use KehlSteinHaus. We got beaten by a German information centre guy doing "I know nothing" when asking for the Eagle's nest.

There's an Austrian motorway vignette too.

Looks like you're calling in at Strasbourg, well worth a visit, not so sure about Luxembourg. Trier has interesting Roman ruins.

I thought I saw reference to a vignette in Austria too - but couldn't make out what it meant. I just kept paying tolls here and there, without problem.

Only problem is, for example, driving across the Brenner Pass from Italy to Austria, the toll roads are totally unnecessary as you can get a good run on the non-toll roads. But the way they have set up the toll road signs almost forces you onto the toll roads. My cousins, who have been doing that trip into Innsbruck for years complained that even they were fooled into getting onto the toll road, when they didn't want too.

We stayed in Gare near the main Luxembourg railway station. The area looked a tad seedy. We went for a walk down the main road in the direction of the Luxembourg centre, and saw a pub a small way up a side road, and as it seemed to be the only place open went there. We had a really nice night there, eating Russian food among all the other patrons who all seemed to be English and smoking cigarettes. At the end of the really nice meal that I'd had with Coke Zero, we were offered free Vodka - which we declined. As we left, my wife overheard the comment "Strange Visitors" referring to us.

Anyhow, I do think central/historic Luxembourg is pretty spectacular, but what we remember the most from our trip there was the amusing visit to the pub.

Renato
