Europe in three weeks !!

We have a three week window in September for a European vacation. Any ideas on how to maximize this time? Can exclude Italy as that was done separately previously.

Would like a mix of train and car. There are some interesting train journeys available.

Ideas or advice appreciated. Flexible on fly and and fly out locations

I can but recommend that you go east - Hungary, Slovenia ( east end of the Alps), Romania and Czech Republic. Cities are great, but once you get. Out into the country you are. In a truly enjoyable environment ( and cheaper!).

We did a 3 week in Europe last May, one week was on a fantastic 3 year season old 45m 40 pax vessel MV President out of Split on the Dalmatian Coast, visited many islands, some 5 tours included, boat could go right into port unlike ships and stayed every afternoon and left next morning after breakfast. Just 6 Aussies on board had a ball, and all the nationalities got on real well, best holiday we'd had in years.

We also spent a week in Vienna, plus Bratislava was unreal, loved it.

Best time to go on the MV President is early June or mid Sept we're told, peak season far to busy, the island of Bol was highlight. There are many boats, the young ones go on the cheaper voyages. Ours was $1875 for 8 days 7 nights about $200 more than a big ship but included $500+ each in land tours, inc. a wine tasting, dinner in village up in mountains and visit to a beautiful lake, tour of Dubrovnik, inc. most meals and wine with dinner, food was really nice too. Our booze bill (and boy we drank some!) was just AUD$300 for the week.

I'd probably choose Paris, Prague, Budapest & Venice given the choice but it's so hard to narrow it down because you think "well if we go all that way we may as well visit AAA, BBB & CCC as well seeing as though we're so close".

Wow, that's a tough one... how do you make the most out of just 3 weeks in Europe?! I would suggest picking 1 place you really want to see and spending a week or so there. Then for the other two weeks, a mixture between big cities (Paris, London, Amsterdam etc.) and smaller cities, perhaps in Eastern Europe (Krakow, Prague, Budapest etc.)

Don't try to cram too many cities in just for the sake of it as you'll only end up tired and won't get the most out of the places you do actually visit. You know you've done it wrong when you get to the Eiffel Tower and all you want to do is have a nap and a cup of coffee!

This is what I would personally do, but you may be interested in vastly different things, which is totally fine:
Week 1: Paris (3/4 days), Brussels (1 day is enough), Amsterdam (2/3 days) - travelling by train
Week 2: Berlin (5/6 days) - Note that I say Berlin for the longest time because that's my personal favourite, however if you have a different favourite you could always spend a week there instead. Then drive down the Autobahn to Munich (2/3 days)
Week 3: Prague, Budapest, Krakow, then back to starting point (or not) for flight home.

Okay, I realise that doesn't exactly add up to three lots of 7 days, but you get the idea. It may also be a bit ambitious; I tend to try and fit too much in..
