Etihad world's leading airline, for the fifth time

Not sure if EY is in one of three global alliance as I sure would like to fly them.

I had an op up from Y to J the very first time I flew EY - here's hoping you have the same luck on your maiden flight with them! I believe the only gulf airline in one of the 3 alliances is QR (joined oneworld on 30 October 2013)...

IMO for EY J it is a wonderful experience, however after several flights in Y, I am quite disenchanted with the experience as inconsistent service standards - distant, uninterested & forgetful FAs' & a bar that 'closes" 2.5 hours prior to landing on more than one occasion would evidently alleviate a few ticking of satisfaction boxes on my vote sheet.

That is unrealistic ... I hope they have other redeeming features than personal luck.

I've only had one flight on EY, and only in Y. However, I wasn't overly impressed. I would definitely give them another try though.

My first flight with EY last year to Ireland in J was a wonderful experience and got an op up to first fron AUH to Mel ! Yep it's hard work but someone has to do it!

This is great news for the west coast traveller. I have been lucky enought to travel in J on a number of occasions with Etihad and the experience has been excellent. Food, transfers, lounge are outstanding. My only gripe would be that you can end up sitting in one of the older cabins which feels tired but the food, service and flat bed still reigns above some of the big boys like QF and CZ and Asiana.

From my limited experience in Etihad Y, I've found their services between AUH and European destinations to be truly world class and significantly better than their services to Australia and Singapore. The planes are newer and cleaner, and the service friendlier and much more professional.

I flew Syd-Auh-Ath return in J in October...their J product leaves QF for dead!

Etihad seems in a class of its own, for business and first class travels though I must admit my view is derived from opinions I've read on forums and blogs. With a number of strategic investments in other carriers it may not need to join the three known alliances though I wish it would go with *A. That would open up new options esp. to Europe and beyond.

I had thought that China Southern was maybe a bit dodgy and had never thought of them as one of the big boys. I have to admit that I hadn't really considered travelling with them, but my presumption is probably ill informed. Even though you are not exactly recommending them, with a possible China trip this year, I will have a closer look at CZ flights.

Unless OP meant big boys = those with A380s?

EY in J to Milan last July returning from Dublin was a superb experience in every way.
Returned yesterday from Sin in QF J and the gulf distance between the two products is mind blowing. The last of the online JASA's.
Prefer to fly via Asia though and our order in preference is SQ, CX and then EY.

They don't need to be in one of the three global alliances for you to be able to fly them (at a cheap/reasonable cost).
Buy some AA miles

So what does it all mean? I can never understand these ratings on airlines.

Surely it's just someone's opinion

It's the opinion of anyone who bothers to vote. No statistical sampling and, AFAIK, no attempt at any sort of qualifying.

These awards are great for the airlines who win and I'm sure that EY is a great airline (I haven't flown them). However we need to recognise this sort of award for the statistical garbage it is.

I think those that actually travel enough know they are garbage. However the once or twice a year flyer who travels in Y is more easily swayed by "awards" like this, which more often than not are awarded based on F and J products.
