Etihad tried to downgrade us

My daughter in Australia had a phone contact from someone with a very thick accent I think on the Thursday before we were due to return from the UK who said something about a downgrade. I checked our booking on the Etihad site, and our seats from AUH to MEL weren't visible any longer, and I couldn't select new seats. I rang Etihad and was assured that we were still in business class all the way, and the seats would be allocated at the airport.

The agent at the airport check in counter could only print our boarding passes for the MAN - AUH leg, but told us that the passes for the next leg would be
available at the gate. At the gate, they took our original passes and printed new ones with both legs, but the AUH-MEL leg in economy. I immediately told the gate agent this wasn't acceptable and we were told to wait for the supervisor. She eventually arrived and told us that the downgrade was due to an aeroplane swap (787-1000 to 787-900) with fewer business class seats. I stood my ground and she eventually offered us a flight the next day to AUH at the same time, with an overnight stop in AUH and the flight to MEL the next morning. I had heard her talking to someone further up the line who said the compensation that would be available if we accepted the downgrade would be US$300 each - fortunately she didn't offer that to us.

So our bags were offloaded and we had to wait around until after the plane had departed to be escorted back through security. She produced new tickets for us, with both flights confirmed, and vouchers for GBP520 each compensation, and told us we would be met in AUH and transported to a hotel. The same agent who checked us in originally had turned up during this period and took us back through security.

We checked into the Radisson hotel on the skyway, and the back to T2 on the next morning. This time everything went smoothly. When we arrived in AUH there was of course no one to meet us, and it took a bit of argy bargy to get the accommodation sorted, but eventually they took us to a 5 Star hotel in the city (a 45 minute drive).

I wonder what would have happened if we had meekly accepted the downgrade (I suspect nothing). I also questioned why they would contact someone in Australia when the passengers were in the UK, and she stated that was the only contact they had for us, despite them having our email contact. The supervisor's comment was that they wouldn't use email for a downgrade. One wonders how they select passengers for downgrades, as we appeared to be among the 1st to book on this flight as all seats were available when I selected them in February. We were travelling on AC awards, so maybe this was a factor.

Thanks for sharing your situation - sounds like you had a 'reasonable' outcome but only because you stood your ground.

Mr LL and I also have EY J award tickets (booked via AC) in March 2023 from SEZ-AUH-SYD - hopefully we won't need your strategy to maintain our booked class of travel.

Good on you. But next time my recommendation would be to stay at the HGI terminal 2/3 which has a fabulous roof top bar.

If the UK261 is the same as EU261 with respect to downgrades, it should have been 75% of the sector fare as a refund. My understanding is the ‘sector’ in this case would be calculated pro rata based on mileage.

Good to hear that was sorted, but just something to note, your MAN-AUH flight was either on a 787-10 or 787-9.

Looking at FR24 for the last few days there was a day where one of the AUH-MEL flights was operated by a 789 instead of a 77W, that must have been the day you were due to travel.

The MAN-UAH flight was always scheduled on a 787-9. The AUH-MEL flight was scheduled on a 787-10 which was swapped to a 787-9 2 days out. The latter was an evening flight from AUH. Our re-scheduled flight MAN-AUH was the same as we were originally booked on, but changed to the following day. The AUH-MEL flight was the morning flight from AUH on a 77W.

My 1st reference was on 11/2/2022 which showed AUH-MEL as a 789, at which time I selected seats 5H and 6K for both MAN-AUH and AUH-MEL flights. I received another email from AC that the flights had changed, but the times were the same and when I checked the EY site the seats were also unchanged. I didn't check further, but suspect this was the AUH-MEL change to 787-10. So as far as I can tell EY460 has always been scheduled for a 787

Strange one as looking at the history of EY460 I went back to July and only July 5th and October 8th were served by the 787. All other flights have been serviced by the 777

Unfortunately, travelling on award tickets seem to put you at the head of the downgrade line. Status sometimes will save you, sometimes not.

Sorry for my ignorance but what is 'AC'???

I have 2 x J award flights (SYD-AUH) booked on EK using velocity points travelling on Dec 10th. Booking was made a long time ago and I selected our seats at the time. I went back into the booking a few days ago to check all was ok and I can see everything is confirmed and our seats are displayed but when I try to go into seat selection it won't let me. I'm wondering if this is some sort of indication of an imminent downgrade at the airport - or am I overthinking it? I just can't figure out why it would prevent me from changing our seat selection.

I assume you meant EY (Etihad).
Some airlines don’t allow advance choices for certain seats on award flights.
It happened to me on JAL. Made the choice but was kicked out to another later.

The other thing is that some airlines freeze the seat map once a certain number of seats in that cabin are sold.

Sounds strange we have had a few recent flights on EY with Velocity points and could select seats right the way through. On the last flight we were both booked in the rear facing seats which I prefer and love but Mrs Jase absolutely loathes so I was checking several times per day and finally a couple of days out one forward seat became free so I changed our seat selections
